Résumé du poste

The building at 50 Stafford Street was originally designed by Green Blankstein Russell in 1965 to house the Archdiocese of Winnipeg Chancery Office. 1x1 architecture was engaged to redevelop the building as an Orthotic Design Clinic that employs 6 full-time staff members and includes a program consisting of casting and fitting rooms and a technical area for the design and fabrication of orthotic devices. The rehabilitation of the building re-established the modernist architecture and allows the clinic to exist within the qualities of the existing building. The conservation included demolishing non-original building elements, restoring the original buff coloured brick which had been painted dark grey and exposing the original finishes and exposed structure. A clean, simple palette of new finishes was used to create a calm, and enlightening space to complement the existing aesthetics. The 1,400 square foot addition was designed with sensitivity to the buildings original architecture by fitting within the footprint of the original north courtyard, resulting in a minimal impact to the original architectural form and is not visible from the primary street elevation on Stafford.
