Reporting to senior leadership, the Operations Controller will play a key role in bridging accounting and operations. This position is responsible for leading the day-to-day accounting functions while providing financial insight that supports operational decision making. The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between detailed financial responsibilities and broader business discussions, helping leaders understand financial performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and support continued operational success. Duties and Responsibilities: The key job functions are: Lead the organization’s day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis. Prepare, review, and present financial and operational reports to management, providing meaningful analysis that supports informed business decisions. Partner with operational leaders to evaluate profitability, job costing, equipment utilization, and overall business performance. Monitor financial results, identify trends, and recommend process improvements that enhance operational efficiency and profitability. Review pricing, costing, margins, and other financial metrics alongside leadership to support strategic planning. Supervise the Accounting team, including Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), and payroll functions while providing ongoing coaching and support. Coordinate year-end financial preparation, including working papers and supporting documentation for external accounting requirements. Maintain accurate financial records, electronic filing systems, and fixed asset schedules. Oversee equipment and asset tracking, including periodic audits and related financial reporting. Assist in managing insurance documentation and ensuring appropriate coverage is maintained for company assets and operations. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and provide financial support for operational projects as required. Education: Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline is preferred. Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is considered a strong asset but is not required. Qualifications: Strong business acumen with the ability to connect financial information to operational performance. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Experience working with accounting software and the ability to quickly learn new systems. Exceptional communication skills with the confidence to present information, participate in leadership discussions, and build credibility across all levels of the organization. Experience: Minimum five years of progressive accounting or financial management experience. Experience within construction, transportation, heavy equipment, manufacturing, or other operationally focused industries is strongly preferred. Experience with job costing, fleet management, equipment accounting, project costing, or operational reporting is highly desirable. Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Senior Accountant, or similar leadership role supporting operations is considered an asset. Experience leading or mentoring accounting staff in a collaborative environment. Skills: Communication: Confident communicator who can effectively partner with operational leaders and present financial information in a practical, business-focused manner. Leadership: Comfortable providing guidance, support, and oversight to an accounting team while fostering collaboration. Analytical Thinking: Strong ability to interpret financial information, identify trends, and recommend improvements. Relationship Building: Proven ability to establish trusted working relationships with internal stakeholders, customers, and vendors. Organization: Excellent planning, prioritization, and time management skills with strong attention to detail. Adaptability: Hands-on, proactive, and comfortable balancing strategic responsibilities with day-to-day operational priorities. Base Salary: $100,000-$120,000 per year Salary will be based on the successful candidate’s experience, qualifications, and overall fit for the role. Comprehensive benefits package. Work Hours: Full-time, permanent position. Monday to Friday. Fully in-office position based in Calgary, Alberta. Additional Notes: This opportunity does not include relocation. It will be the responsibility of the candidate should relocation be required. All applicants must be authorized to work in Canada to be considered for employment.
