Position: Underwriting & Portfolio Analyst Location: Ontario, Canada Work Model: Hybrid Salary Range: CAD 80-85k Note: Mandatory insurance industry experience, ideally within Travel Insurance, Property & Casualty (P&C), Accident & Sickness, or specialty insurance products. About this opportunity: On behalf of our client, we're seeking an Underwriting & Portfolio Analyst to join a collaborative and hands-on underwriting team supporting insurance portfolio performance, profitability management, forecasting, pricing initiatives, and governance activities. This role combines strong technical analytical capabilities with core underwriting expertise and is ideal for a candidate who brings insurance industry experience, intellectual curiosity, and a passion for driving profitable growth through data-driven insights. What You'll Do: Portfolio Performance & Experience Monitoring Monitor portfolio performance through profitability, loss ratio, frequency, severity, claims trend, exposure, and renewal analyses. Produce regular portfolio reviews across products, partners, distribution channels, markets, and customer segments. Identify emerging trends, performance deterioration indicators, and material deviations from expectations. Investigate drivers of profitability changes and support recommendations for corrective actions. Support the development and maintenance of portfolio scorecards, monitoring frameworks, and key performance indicators. Underwriting Governance & Remediation Support the administration and maintenance of portfolio governance and monitoring processes. Identify products, partners, customer segments, and portfolios requiring enhanced oversight or remediation. Support recommendations related to pricing actions, underwriting changes, product enhancements, and governance requirements. Prepare materials and analysis for underwriting governance committees and leadership reviews. Monitor remediation initiatives and assess effectiveness of implemented actions. Forecasting & Business Planning Support the preparation and maintenance of technical forecasts for budgeting, planning, and performance reviews. Develop forecast assumptions using portfolio experience, pricing actions, underwriting initiatives, and emerging trends. Monitor actual performance against forecast and analyze material variances. Assess the expected impact of pricing, underwriting, and product changes on future portfolio performance. Deliver actionable portfolio insights that support business strategy and profitability objectives. Pricing & Profitability Analysis Support pricing initiatives through experience studies, profitability analyses, and performance reviews. Analyze domestic and international tenders, renewals, and new business opportunities. Assist with profitability assessments for current and prospective partners. Support commercial and product teams during partner negotiations and performance discussions. Monitor pricing effectiveness and identify opportunities for portfolio improvement. Collaborate with actuarial and analytics teams to validate assumptions used in pricing and forecasting activities. Analytics & Reporting Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and analytical solutions using SQL, Python, Power BI, Excel, or similar tools. Support automation of recurring portfolio monitoring and profitability reporting processes. Partner with Product, Claims, Finance, Commercial, and Operations teams to enhance portfolio insights and data quality. Maintain clear and auditable documentation supporting analyses, governance decisions, and underwriting recommendations. What You'll Bring: Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, Business Analytics, or a related quantitative discipline. Minimum 2 years of experience in underwriting, portfolio management, pricing, insurance analytics, or actuarial analysis. Strong understanding of insurance profitability metrics, underwriting performance indicators, and portfolio management principles. Experience supporting or interpreting experience studies and profitability analyses. Exposure to forecasting, portfolio reviews, underwriting governance, or performance monitoring activities. Advanced Excel skills. Experience with SQL, Python, Power BI, or similar analytical tools is highly desirable. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking abilities. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to explain technical findings to business audiences. Self-motivated, enthusiastic, and eager to contribute within a small, collaborative, and hands-on team environment.
