Role Description The Assistant/Associate Professor of Legal Studies is a full-time, on-site faculty position based in Edmonton, AB. The role involves designing, delivering, and revising undergraduate and/or graduate courses in legal studies, with a focus on accessible and engaging learning. The successful candidate will conduct and disseminate scholarly research, mentor and advise students, and participate in academic supervision where appropriate. Day-to-day responsibilities include preparing lectures and learning materials, assessing student work, providing timely feedback, and holding regular office hours. The professor will also contribute to program development, serve on departmental and university committees, and collaborate with colleagues to advance Athabasca University’s mission of open and inclusive education. Qualifications Advanced academic background in law, legal studies, or a closely related field (PhD or equivalent terminal degree preferred; consideration may be given to candidates with a JD/LLB and significant academic or professional experience). Demonstrated expertise in one or more areas of legal studies (e.g., public law, private law, Indigenous law, human rights, administrative law, socio-legal studies, or related fields). Proven experience in university-level teaching, including course design, assessment, and use of inclusive, learner-centered pedagogies. Active research agenda, with evidence of peer-reviewed publications, scholarly presentations, or equivalent research outputs. Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly to diverse learners. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and respectful engagement in both teaching and collegial work. Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, contribute to committee work, and support program growth and innovation. Experience with educational technologies and online or blended learning environments is an asset. Professional legal experience, membership in a law society, or relevant community-engaged work is considered an advantage.

The professor will design and deliver undergraduate and graduate legal studies courses while conducting and disseminating scholarly research. Additionally, the role involves mentoring students, participating in academic supervision, and contributing to university committee work.

Candidates should possess a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in law or legal studies, or a JD/LLB with significant professional experience. Proven expertise in university-level teaching and an active research agenda with peer-reviewed publications are required.
