Job Title: Expert DBA Duration: 6 months contract with extensions and conversion to FTE Job Type : Hybrid - (Onsite Tuesday and 3rd Friday of the month) Location: Toronto, ON Job Description: The Expert DBA will be responsible for managing and optimizing performance of large-scale Azure SQL databases in a high-demand enterprise banking environment. The role focuses on diagnosing and resolving complex database performance issues, ensuring efficient query execution, and maintaining system stability. Key responsibilities include monitoring database performance, identifying bottlenecks using Query Store and execution plans, tuning queries, and addressing resource contention. The DBA will collaborate with development teams to optimize application-database interactions and reduce latency. Responsibilities also include capacity planning, scaling strategies, and root cause analysis for critical incidents. The role requires deep expertise in Azure SQL PaaS, including understanding of system limitations, resource models (DTU/vCore), Hyperscale architecture, and best practices for performance tuning and scalability. Must Have Requirement: Total years of experience: 10+ Extensive experience as a Senior/Expert DBA in Azure SQL environments Proven experience managing very large databases (40TB+) Strong expertise in Azure SQL PaaS performance tuning and optimization Deep knowledge of: • Query plan regressions • Parameter sniffing and parameter sensitivity • Cardinality estimation issues • Query timeouts, blocking, and deadlocks Hands-on experience with Query Store and execution plan analysis Advanced T-SQL performance tuning skills Strong understanding of indexes, statistics, and recompilation strategies Experience handling high resource contention and workload optimization Expertise in DTU/vCore models, Hyperscale architecture, and scaling strategies Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills for production incidents Nice to Have: Experience with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Application Insights Knowledge of Azure SQL security features (auditing, threat detection, managed identities) Experience with disaster recovery and geo-replication strategies Understanding of database access control and security best practices Exposure to Dynatrace for performance monitoring
