Bulwark Dynamics is seeking a Structural Engineer II — Marine Systems to design, analyze, fabricate, and validate structural components and mechanical assemblies for advanced autonomous marine vessels. This hands-on role focuses on structural fabrication, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), brackets and mounts, actuation interfaces, prototype assembly, and mechanical subsystem integration. You will work alongside engineers, technicians, and fabricators to turn concepts into real hardware — working closely with our Naval Architect, Actuation Engineer, and Offloading Engineer to translate vessel and system loads into lightweight, manufacturable structures. The focus of this position is structural and mechanical systems — not hull hydrodynamics. Responsibilities Perform structural analysis of marine vessel components, assemblies, brackets, mounts, equipment foundations, supports, and other mechanically loaded structures. Develop and interpret FEA models to evaluate stress, strain, deformation, buckling, fatigue, and potential structural failure modes. Use first-principles calculations to validate FEA results and identify structural weaknesses early in the design process. Receive and interpret loading inputs from Naval Architecture, Actuation, Offloading, and other engineering disciplines. Translate system-level loads into structural load cases, boundary conditions, design margins, and practical hardware solutions. Design brackets, mounts, equipment foundations, supports, stiffeners, attachment points, and other structural components. Evaluate welded, bolted, bonded, and mechanically fastened connections. Balance structural strength and stiffness with weight, manufacturability, maintainability, installation, and cost. Support prototype fabrication, assembly, integration, structural testing, and sea trials. Investigate structural failures or unexpected test results and support root-cause analysis and design improvements. Work directly with engineers, technicians, fabricators, suppliers, and shipyard partners. Document analyses, assumptions, load cases, results, and key design decisions. Requirements Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated technical experience. 2+ years of relevant structural or mechanical engineering experience. Working proficiency with FEA. Strong understanding of structural mechanics, load paths, stress and strain, bending, shear, torsion, buckling, material behavior, and structural failure modes. Ability to use hand calculations and first-principles analysis to validate FEA results. Experience designing mechanically loaded components, brackets, mounts, supports, or structural assemblies. Ability to interpret engineering drawings and CAD models. Understanding of material selection and manufacturing considerations. Strong practical engineering judgment and cross-functional communication skills. Willingness to work hands-on with prototypes and physical hardware. This role requires the ability to access export-controlled information and technology under applicable U.S. law, including ITAR and EAR. You must be a U.S. person as defined by applicable export-control regulations or otherwise eligible to obtain any required U.S. Government authorization; certain assignments may also require eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance. Nice to Have Experience with boats, USVs/ASVs, autonomous vehicles, aerospace vehicles, automotive or race-car systems, heavy equipment, robotics, or other mechanically loaded vehicles. Marine or shipboard structural design experience. SolidWorks FEA. SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD experience. Experience with GD&T and Design for Manufacturing (DFM). Experience designing aluminum, steel, stainless steel, composite, welded, or bolted structures. Experience with fatigue, vibration, shock, impact, or dynamic loading. Hydraulic, mechanical, or robotic actuation experience. Experience working directly with machine shops, welders, fabricators, or shipyards. Prototype fabrication, testing, integration, or sea-trial experience. Familiarity with USCG, ABS, U.S. Navy, or similar marine structural standards.
