Description The Opportunity: L’nuey Midwifery Program Lead About The Organization Tajikeimik is the new and developing health and wellness organization that is leading health transformation on behalf of Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia. In collaboration with Chiefs, Grand Council, and Health Directors, Tajikeimik will build on and evolve the health and wellness services and programs used by Mi’kmaw people in Nova Scotia; improve health service delivery; and strengthen coordination with Federal and Provincial health system partners—with the goal of improving overall health for Mi’kmaq and communities. Position Overview Tajikeimik is seeking a L’nuey Midwifery Program Lead will support the development of the Mi’kmaw Cohort for the new Bachelor of Health Sciences in Indigenous Midwifery. This program is being developed in partnership between Tajikeimik and the First Nations Technical Institute (FNTI). Working collaboratively with the Tajikeimik Policy and Planning team, community partners, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Midwives and the FNTI faculty, the L’nuey Midwifery Program Lead will provide strategic, academic, and operational leadership for the Mi’kmaw Cohort. The L’nuey Midwifery Program Lead will assist in recruitment, engagement and development of the cohort and ensure that clinical learning is rigorous, culturally safe and aligned with Mi’kmaw values and community priorities. Service Location: Millbrook or Membertou, with the possibility of a hybrid or home working model. What You’ll Do Specific responsibilities will include but will not be limited to: Provide day to day leadership to the Tajikeimik L’nuey Midwifery team and guide the development and implementation of the Mi’kmaw Midwifery Cohort. Build strong, trust based relationships that support collaborative, community driven program development. Develop a working knowledge of FNTI curriculum, policies, and programs, and collaborate with FNTI, Knowledge Keepers, educators, and Health Directors to ensure curriculum reflects Mi’kmaw language, values, and traditional knowledge. Recruit and engage L’nu educators and support the creation of a formal instructor hiring process. Establish partnerships with midwives and Indigenous Midwifery programs to provide mentorship and clinical experience for students. Engage Knowledge Keepers, Elders, Chiefs, Health Directors, and provincial partners to inform program development and support recruitment of future Mi’kmaw midwives. Work with the Communications team to develop materials that promote awareness of the Mi’kmaw Midwifery Cohort. Collaborate with policy team to develop program policies, protocols, and frameworks. Create processes for student mentorship, retention, and success, including partnerships with Community Health Centres for hands on learning. Support the development of employment pathways for graduates within Mi’kmaw communities and the provincial health system, including partnerships with hospitals, EHS, health authorities, regulatory bodies, and primary care providers to enable Mi’kmaw and Indigenous midwives to practice in Nova Scotia and to advance culturally safe birthing services in health facilities and community settings. Act as a key connector between all partners to ensure alignment and strong communication. What We’re Looking For Strong lived experience and knowledge of Mi’kmaw culture and language. Experience working with Elders and Knowledge Keepers. Experience working with, establishing, and leading groups. Knowledge of the systemic harm experienced by Indigenous people accessing the Health System during pregnancy and birth, including but not limited to – Birth Alert system, coerced and forced sterilization, racism and lack of access to culturally safe care. Knowledge and support of Tajikeimik’s vision and mission, with a personal commitment to advancing Mi’kmaw health and wellness through self-determination. Your Qualifications A Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Indigenous health, midwifery, nursing, public health, education, or a related discipline). Proven track record in program management, Indigenous health, or community development. With experience in midwifery or maternal-child health. Experience working with Mi’kmaw communities in ways that are collaborative and respectful. Deep understanding of Mi’kmaw culture, traditions, and the historical context of Indigenous health in the Atlantic Region. Exceptional ability to engage with a diverse range of partners, from grassroots community members to senior government officials. A passion for Indigenous reproductive justice and the revitalization of traditional birthing practices. Commitment to advancing the health, wellness, and self-determination of Mi’kmaw communities. Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout Nova Scotia. An up-to-date Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check.
