Duties And Responsibilities Reporting directly to the Chair of the Department of Electronics, the Electrical and Mechatronics Lab Technologist is an integral member of the Technical Staff. The Technologist is jointly responsible for creating, operating, and maintaining a safe and professional laboratory environment that supports both undergraduate and, as allocated and approved by the Chair, graduate laboratories. This is achieved by acquiring and maintaining proficiency in the safe operation of laboratory equipment and by performing high-quality equipment and facility repair, maintenance of infrastructure and equipment required for undergraduate courses, modernization of labs and equipment, and fabrication of devices, mechanisms, and circuits as required. The role requires a broad set of skills, including electrical/electronic, mechanical, and some computer programming and knowledge of Mechatronics oriented software applications. The Technologist will contribute to the development and maintenance of undergraduate laboratory experiments, particularly in courses supporting the Mechatronics program, and may support graduate student research when directed by the Chair. They will perform a supervisory and advisory role concerning students and student employees working within the laboratory, ensuring that facilities are used safely and appropriately. Participation in the University Health and Safety Program within the laboratory is mandatory, and the Technologist will perform administrative duties associated with the position. Work requirements will depend on course schedules and deadlines which may vary between terms or within a term. Occasional flex time or overtime may be required and requested. The position will require working with other departments and the Director of the Mechatronics program (while still being under the management of the Chair of the Department of Electronics). Qualifications The incumbent must possess the following qualifications: Maintain a broad practical knowledge of electronics and electrical engineering in order to support laboratories spanning the field. A thorough up-to-date knowledge of electrical and electronic circuits and laboratory equipment and both hardware and software aspects of computer systems is essential. This position requires strong technical, communication, interpersonal, administrative and organizational skills. The incumbent assists in the efficient daily operation and continued enhancement of essential laboratories, therefore a solid grounding in laboratory methodology, techniques and procedures is necessary. They must have a broad range of skills including attention to detail and ability to focus and problem solve for situations that may have undefined answers. The incumbent needs to have the ability to be empathetic yet enforce policy, and should demonstrate a passion for continual learning in the field. The Technologist Must Possess Good knowledge of analog and digital instrumentation, measurement sensors, electronics and electrical systems, computer technology, control systems, and programming. Practical knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, including solid and fluid mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials, and heat transfer. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently or as part of a team with students, other technical staff, and faculty. Ability to prioritize projects, set, and achieve deadlines. Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and repairing complex systems involving controllers, sensors, and integrated circuits. Expertise in software platforms for lab measurements and control, including LabVIEW, MATLAB, Simulink, Python, C/C++, VHDL, Verilog, and PLC programming environments. Advanced proficiency with test and measurement hardware and prototyping tools. Familiarity with embedded systems, microcontrollers, FPGAs, and related hardware. Knowledge of PID control systems, signal processing, and data acquisition systems to a level appropriate for undergraduate and graduate laboratory experiments. Hands on experience with mechatronics systems, including robotics, control systems, electric motors, sensors, and electric/hybrid electric propulsion systems. Commitment to lifelong learning, staying updated with the latest developments in mechatronics, electronics, and software tools, including AI relating to mechatronics. Education And Experience The above is normally acquired through: Completion of a three-year college diploma in in electronics, mechatronics, or industrial automation engineering technology from a recognized institute or accredited equivalent; OR, completion of a recognized BEng degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics. Five years of experience following graduation in a position providing exposure to a wide variety of equipment and repair procedures, ideally at an educational institution or in a research and development environment. Electronics trouble-shooting experience preferred. Electrical measurement experience preferred. Circuit design and assembly experience preferred (schematic entry, simulation, board layout, SMT assembly). Microcontroller programming experience preferred.
