Pipelayer – Underground Utilities CBO Earthworks – Lacombe, AB Full-time | Seasonal Summary CBO Earthworks is seeking an experienced Pipelayer to join our underground utilities division. This position is responsible for the safe installation, repair, and maintenance of underground water and sewer infrastructure, including mains, services, manholes, catch basins, valves, hydrants, and associated utility systems. Working alongside excavator operators, laborers, and foremen, the successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality underground construction projects while maintaining the highest standards of safety, workmanship, and professionalism. Key Responsibilities Install and repair water mains, sanitary sewer mains, storm sewer systems, and utility services. Install hydrants, valves, fittings, manholes, catch basins, and related underground infrastructure. Grade and prepare pipe bedding and backfill to project specifications with varying pipe sizes and materials. Ensure proper pipe alignment, grade, elevation, and joint assembly using pipe or rotary lasers and grade checking equipment. Assist with utility tie-ins, water tapping, repairs, and emergency service work. Perform safe hand exposing around existing underground utilities. Read construction drawings, utility plans, and grade stakes. Work closely with excavator operators to safely install underground infrastructure. Perform trench safety inspections and ensure proper trench protection is utilized. Assist with compaction, testing, and restoration activities. Operate compactors, pumps, saws, and other small construction equipment. Complete daily inspections, FLHAs, and required company documentation using SiteDocs and other company applications. Maintain tools and equipment in clean, safe working condition. Follow all company safety policies, OH&S legislation, and Ground Disturbance requirements. Qualifications Previous experience installing underground water and sewer infrastructure is required. Experience laying PVC, HDPE, ductile iron, concrete, grouting and patching, and related underground pipe systems. Ability to read grade stakes, utility drawings, and construction plans. Strong understanding of trench safety and excavation hazards. Experience working around existing utilities. Valid Class 5 license required. Experience operating skid steers, compactors, or other construction equipment is considered an asset. Mechanical aptitude and ability to troubleshoot field issues. Strong communication and teamwork and math skills. Reliable, dependable, and committed to producing quality workmanship. Preferred Certifications CSTS 2020 Ground Disturbance Level II Standard First Aid / CPR WHMIS H2S Alive Confined Space Fall Protection Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong understanding of municipal underground construction practices. Ability to establish and maintain proper pipe grade and alignment. Ability to safely work in excavations and around heavy equipment. Physically capable of lifting, carrying, climbing, and working in varying weather conditions. Comfortable using mobile applications for inspections, safety documentation, and communication. Safety-focused with exceptional attention to detail. Job Details Employment Type: Full-time, Seasonal Schedule: 10–12 hour shifts with overtime as required.
