Volunteer Group Support Role Time Commitment: ~2 hours/week About the Group: We are a peer-led group of individuals living with acquired memory loss (such as dementia) who meet weekly for conversation, connection, and mutual support. Our group is run by and for people with lived experience. About the Role: We are seeking a reliable, friendly, and proactive Group Support Volunteer to assist with general coordination of the weekly group meeting. You’ll provide hands-on support to help the group function as independently as possible. Volunteers are there to help us make our meetings run smoothly and support us in reaching our goals. Your Responsibilities Include: · Attending weekly meetings (alternate meetings – depending on group needs) · Picking up/coordinating refreshments for the group (paid for by the group) · Liaising with Centre staff and/or care partners as needed · Sending out group reminders or notices (e.g., meeting changes) · Supporting group-led goals, like outreach or planned activities · Assisting with the creation of flyers or event promotion materials · Maintaining a respectful and welcoming environment · Helping resolve or de-escalate conflict if it arises · Encouraging quieter members to speak and reminding louder ones to make space for others · Letting the group know if you are unable to attend a session Who You Are: · Someone with an understanding (or interest in learning about) dementia and memory loss · A good communicator who is calm, patient, and empowering · Ideally has a background in social work, psychology, gerontology, or a related social service field · Skilled at reading group dynamics and knowing when to step in or step back · Dependable, organized, and respectful of those with lived experience Are you looking for a meaningful way to make a difference in your community? We are currently seeking a reliable and compassionate volunteer (preferably 25+ years old) to support our weekly social group for individuals living with acquired memory loss, such as dementia. We're a group of bright minds who need a set of capable hands! Our ideal volunteer is someone who can attend our weekly 1.5-hour meetings and assist with the logistics and ensure the group runs smoothly. Your role might include: · Liaising with the Centre (e.g., checking in with staff, unlocking doors, etc.) · Picking up light refreshments (costs covered by the group) · Supporting outreach efforts like designing flyers or swag · Encouraging group participation and offering support if any conflicts arise · Helping with any other light duties to keep things running smoothly . Respond to emails / provide updates with DEN staff as needed We're looking for someone who is kind, dependable, and ready to jump in where needed. If you're someone who enjoys building relationships and working with older adults, we'd love to meet you. Location: · Hamilton Coffee Club o Sackville Hill Seniors Recreation Centre, 780 Upper Wentworth St. Hamilton o Thursdays from 1:30-3pm Required Qualifications/Training: · Must be available during group meeting hours · A basic understanding of dementia or acquired memory loss · Training/orientation provided . Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) or willingness to obtain Skills Preferred: · Strong interpersonal and communication skills · Background or education in social work, psychology, gerontology, or related social services · Experience in group support, conflict resolution, or community programming · Comfortable working with older adults and diverse abilities Volunteers will have access to additional training and learning opportunities related to dementia, communication and group support.
