Participate in regular training, drills, and practice sessions to maintain and enhance your skills Ensure the cleaning, servicing, and maintenance of equipment, apparatus, turnout gear, and uniforms Support and engage in public education programs and community events, promoting fire safety and building community relationships Requirements Applicants are strongly encouraged to review the Firefighter Information Guide for full details about the recruitment and training process. To be considered, candidates must: Be at least 19 years of age Hold a high school diploma or equivalent Reside within the District of Sparwood Possess a valid Class 5 non-restricted driver’s license with a safe driving record Provide a clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check Be in good physical condition and able to successfully complete a physical agility test Be capable of performing prolonged, physically demanding work in adverse conditions and inclement weather Be available to attend required training sessions and maintain an acceptable attendance record for emergency calls Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment Interact with the public in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner Preferred Qualifications (Assets) Availability to respond to daytime emergencies Strong mechanical aptitude Possession of a Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 driver’s license, and/or air brake endorsement Completion of fire-related courses, such as NFPA 1001 Level II, NFPA 1002, NFPA 472 Advanced first aid training (e.g., OFA Level 3, EMR, or equivalent) Previous firefighting, emergency services, or Mine Rescue experience Salary & Benefits Paid On-Call Firefighters are compensated for training practices, emergency response call-outs and scheduled on-call duty shifts. Training: $20.03 per hour Emergency Response & Duty: $25.15 per hour In addition, Paid On-Call Firefighters receive a range of benefits, including: Paid, accredited training (e.g., NFPA 1001, First Aid/CPR, Air Brake Endorsement, Live Fire Training, Fire Officer, and other specialized courses) All required equipment and gear provided Membership in the Firefighter’s Social Club, use of amenities, and invitations to annual banquets Free and confidential counselling services for firefighters and immediate family members Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance Annual Active Living Pass with access to Leisure Centre facilities The opportunity to be part of a skilled, dedicated, and community-focused team Schedule & Commitment Firefighters are expected to maintain regular attendance at practices, emergency calls, and required training sessions in order to remain active members of the department Practices: Held every Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm Recruitment Process Becoming a Paid On-Call Firefighter is a challenging, rewarding, and team-oriented experience. The recruitment process is multi-step, taking place over several weeks and consisting of three stages: Application & In-Person Interview Background Checks & Documentation Physical Fitness & Practical Agility Test Applicants must be available to complete all stages of the recruitment process, followed by initial onboarding and training events.

Provide fire prevention, protection, suppression, and rescue services during hazardous and emergency situations. Maintain equipment and participate in regular training, drills, and community fire safety education programs.

Candidates must be at least 19 years old, reside in Sparwood, hold a high school diploma, and possess a valid Class 5 driver's license. Applicants must pass a criminal record check and a physical agility test to ensure they can perform demanding work in adverse conditions.
