About The Role As an R&D Attorney, you will shape the accuracy, reliability, and quality of AI outputs that hundreds of legal teams use in daily work. You will use your legal experience to guide GC AI toward practical excellence by designing legal evaluations, improving system prompts, validating outputs against real-world legal standards, and translating substantive expertise into product improvements that build user trust. At a fast-moving, product-market-fit stage startup, your work will help raise the bar for how AI is tested in legal workflows and define the future of the leading legal AI platform for in-house teams What You’ll Do Design and run rigorous evaluations measuring the quality of our AI-generated outputs in order to ensure they meet the high standards expected by top-tier legal professionals. Review and validate product outputs for accuracy, relevance, comprehensiveness, helpfulness, etc. Collaborate closely with the engineering and GTM teams to identify performance gaps, diagnose their causes, and develop solutions. Serve as the legal voice of quality, advocating for precision, consistency, and clarity in AI outputs. Bridge technical teams and legal domain expertise, translating legal concepts into product requirements and product concepts back into legal terms. Act as the bridge between technical teams and legal domain expertise, translating complex legal concepts into clear product requirements and vice versa. Provide domain-specific legal expertise that guides feature development and product roadmap decisions. Ideate new products based on a deep understanding of legal teams' pain points. What You've Done Law degree and license to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction. 5+ years of legal experience, with meaningful in-house experience required. Substantive depth in one or more areas of in-house legal work, such as corporate-commercial or transactional law, contract drafting and negotiation, product or regulatory counseling, privacy, compliance, employment, fintech or litigation work. Experience using generative AI for legal work and evaluating generative AI outputs. Strong analytical skills, including the ability to design metrics, interpret evaluation results, and turn legal reasoning into logical, repeatable steps. Strong cross-functional communication skills, with the ability to work closely with Engineering, Product, and GTM teams. Nice to Have You are already a GC AI user. You are nerdy about legal tech, especially prompt engineering and quality assurance. You care about user experience, especially how legal professionals interact with and trust AI assistants. You have worked closely with software engineers before. Ability to design and interpret evaluation metrics and to abstract legal reasoning and processes into logical, repeatable steps. A Note On Pace We’re building something new in a once-in-a-generation shift in technology and the legal industry, so we move at a relentless pace. We expect urgency, ownership, and good judgment even when things aren’t perfectly clear. If you need structure and consensus to do your best work, this isn’t the right place for you. If you thrive in ambiguity and growth, work with intensity, and want real responsibility, keep reading. We’re excited to meet you. How We Work Together GC AI is a distributed company with team members across North America, and soon Europe. We believe that because our business is AI, human connection matters more, not less. We invest in bringing people together through our hub model: regular coworking sessions, customer dinners, team and company offsites. If you’re in a location without an office, expect up to 10% travel (and more for customer-facing roles). Team members in the San Francisco Bay Area and Provo, UT (within 50 miles of the office) work together on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. As we grow, we plan to establish permanent offices in more hub cities, and we will look to our team members to help build that in-person culture. We currently hire across the United States and Canada. Equal Opportunity Employment GC AI is an equal opportunity employer that supports workplace diversity and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender identity/expression, national origin, age, military service eligibility, veteran status, sexual orientation, marital status, physical or mental disability, or any other protected class. GC AI is committed to working with and providing reasonable accommodation to applicants with physical and mental disabilities. #LI-GCAI Fraud Notice to GC AI Applicants To protect yourself against phishing and recruitment fraud, please note that GC AI only accepts job applications through our official careers page at https://gc.ai/careers and through sponsored jobs on LinkedIn.
