Engineering Manager

Position: ENGINEERING MANAGER The Engineering Manager provides leadership for the four Greenfire Resources SAGD facilities and leads the multidisciplinary engineering function supporting safe, reliable and cost-effective operations. The role is accountable for engineering governance and leads the asset integrity, facility engineering, technical safety, MOC, and discipline engineering programs. In addition, this role closely supports the development and capital projects teams. The Engineering Manager is responsible to collaborate with the Capital Projects Manager, Development Manager, Operations Manager, Maintenance Manager, HSE Manager, and Production Manager to understand and support business priorities, budgets, and planning and execution strategies for the company. This position is based in the Calgary office. Occasional evening or weekend support may be required in response to operational needs, project milestones, commissioning or start-up activities. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Vice President, Operations Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to: Leadership and Team Management Lead, coach and develop a multidisciplinary team supporting asset integrity, facility engineering, discipline engineering, projects, reliability, and document control programs. Establish clear priorities, accountabilities, budgets, and performance expectations aligned with operating plans, production targets, project commitments and company goals. Build technical capability through effective resource planning, mentoring, performance management, succession planning and the appropriate use of consultants and specialized service providers. Engineering Governance and Technical Assurance Develop, maintain and consistently apply engineering policies, procedures, design practices, technical standards, specifications and quality requirements. Maintain compliance with APEGA Permit to Practice and Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) requirements, and support Greenfire’s PEIMS, CMS and related engineering governance systems. Ensure engineering work complies with applicable legislation, regulatory requirements and industry codes and standards, including those issued by ASME, API and CSA. Provide technical assurance through disciplined reviews, risk assessments, management of change (MOC), design verification and clear documentation of engineering decisions. Operations, Reliability, Asset Integrity and Facility Optimization Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Regulatory, Environmental, and Production teams to troubleshoot, debottleneck and optimize SAGD facilities, including steam generation, well pads, water treatment, emulsion handling, bitumen treatment, and utilities systems. Identify and prioritize practical opportunities to improve production, reliability, operating cost, equipment performance, and asset integrity. Lead the team in using operating data, technical analysis and economic evaluation to support timely, risk-informed decisions, measurable performance improvement, and team opportunity prioritization. Projects, Contractors and Technical Execution Interface with EPC firms, engineering consultants and vendors to ensure work is safe, fit for purpose, operable, maintainable and delivered to agreed scope, quality, cost and schedule. Lead the MOC process including issuance, implementation, and task prioritization. Collaborate with project, operations, maintenance, development, supply chain and HSE teams to confirm design basis, constructability, operability, project risks and readiness for handover. Ensure engineering records, drawings, calculations, specifications, vendor data and as-built documentation are complete, controlled and current. Business Planning, Performance and Collaboration Develop and manage engineering budgets, resource plans, forecasts and performance measures, and provide clear reporting on costs, schedules, risks, priorities and results. Support annual operating and capital planning by developing technically sound scopes, cost estimates, schedules, risk assessments and investment recommendations. Evaluate emerging technologies and improvement opportunities based on safety, technical merit, operability, economics and strategic value. Build strong working relationships across Greenfire and communicate technical matters clearly to executive leaders, field teams, regulators, contractors and other stakeholders. Safety, Regulatory and Risk Management Demonstrate visible safety leadership and ensure engineering decisions protect people and the environment, maintain regulatory compliance and safeguard the integrity of Greenfire’s assets. Identify, assess and mitigate technical, process safety, project and operational risks through appropriate engineering controls and proactive follow-through. Promote continuous improvement, learning and accountability while ensuring compliance with Greenfire policies and applicable legal and regulatory requirements. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILL SET: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent with pertinent experience. 15 or more years of progressive oil and gas engineering experience, including substantial experience supporting operating SAGD or thermal heavy-oil facilities and at least five years in a leadership role. Demonstrated owner-operator experience with facility optimization, asset integrity, project management, brownfield modifications, commissioning, start-up and operational troubleshooting. Strong multidisciplinary knowledge of process facilities, asset integrity, reliability, project execution and applicable engineering codes and standards. Proven ability to lead technical teams and contractors, manage budgets and competing priorities, and deliver practical solutions in a fast-paced operating environment. Strong judgment, business acumen, analytical capability and written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence decisions at both field and executive levels.
