ABOUT THE SHAAREY ZEDEK Congregation Shaarey Zedek is a centre for Conservative Judaism that welcomes the community to experience spiritual growth, continuing education and the enrichment of lifecycle events. Established in 1889, the synagogue is one of the oldest and largest continuously operating congregations in Western Canada. Holding profound historical importance as a cornerstone institution in Manitoba, Shaarey Zedek continues to play a leading role as an anchor in Jewish life. With a recently renovated and expanded building, the synagogue continues to grow and meet the needs of community, provide learning opportunities and spiritual connection. THE OPPORTUNITY Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) serves as the senior administrative and operational leader of a dynamic, growing organization. This newly created role is responsible for effective management and oversight of the synagogue operations, administration, finance, human resources, facilities, security, technology and operational systems. Congregation Shaarey Zedek is seeking a relationship-driven leader to work in collaboration with the Senior Rabbi, Chief Development Officer, and Board of Directors to ensure a welcoming, financially sustainable, mission-driven and community focused synagogue. This is an exciting opportunity to modernize and advance processes and systems alongside a dedicated and passionate team. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Support the implementation of the Board-approved strategic, operational and organizational initiatives. Provide organizational leadership, operational oversight and administrative continuity across all synagogue functions. Provide timely reporting, communication, and strategic advice to the board to ensure good governance and informed decisions. Lead all human resource functions, and oversee recruitment, onboarding, performance management, employee relations, compensation administration, workplace policies and HR compliance of all administrative staff. Lead the operational modernization and process improvement initiatives, including technology and systems enhancements. Develop and implement operational policies, procedures, systems, and best practices. Oversee office administration, internal controls, risk management, operational workflows, and organizational systems. Manage facilities operations, maintenance, capital infrastructure needs, security, and vendor relationships. Work in partnership with the Executive, Treasurer, Finance Committee and the Board to support the congregation’s financial planning, sustainability, operational stewardship and financial performance. Establish collaborative working relationships with clergy, lay leadership, committees, staff, volunteers and community partners to advance the mission and strategic priorities and promote cross-functional coordination, accountability and transparency. Foster an environment focused on collaboration, workplace problem-solving and inclusivity. SELECTION CRITERIA Significant senior leadership and administrative management experience, preferably within a non-profit, community, educational, faith-based or public sector environment. Demonstrated success managing an agency, facility or operation with the achievement of operational effectiveness. Experience overseeing operations, finance, human resources, administration, facilities and organizational systems. Experience working in a non-profit setting including working with a Board of Directors. Successful record of budget management and oversight of financial operations. Operational leadership skills with ability to manage complex priorities, organizational change and cross-functional operations. Practical knowledge in computer systems for business applications and capacity to blend systems, people and process to optimize operations for a sustainable future. Empowering, responsive, service-oriented, and compassionate leader with the ability to coach, mentor, and influence. Adaptable and emotionally intelligent person with exceptional interpersonal, problem-solving, and conflict management skills. Superior written and spoken communication skills, coupled with the ability to negotiate, influence, and facilitate. Commitment to the mission, values and communal role of Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
