Design Engineering - Co-op Student Sterling Industries – Whitmore, ON Job Type: Co-op About the Company Sterling Industries is a fast-growing North American based contract manufacturer and assembler of medical devices and sub-components. We help clients deliver successful products by providing scaled production, design-for-manufacturing expertise, supplier consolidation and other critical value chain services. Position Objective The Engineering Co-op student will support the Design Engineering team in the development and commercialization of medical devices and related technologies. The role includes product design support, prototyping, testing, documentation, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to support projects from concept through production. MAJOR DUTIES: Assist in the development of product concepts, 3D models, assemblies, and engineering drawings using SolidWorks Support prototype builds, testing, and evaluation activities Participate in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) reviews Assist with engineering change documentation, BOM updates, and technical file preparation Support verification and validation activities including fixture development and test execution Collaborate with QA, Operations, Supply Chain, and Project Management teams Assist in technical documentation including drawings, work instructions, and reports Participate in engineering meetings, brainstorming sessions, and project reviews FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES Learning Agility - Demonstrates curiosity and quickly learns manufacturing processes and systems. Analytical Thinking - Uses basic date analysis to support troubleshooting and process improvements. Attention to Detail - Ensures accuracy in documentation and adherence to procedures. Initiative - Proactively supports production needs and seeks opportunities for improvement. Team Collaboration - Works effectively with cross-functional teams in a production environment. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program in Mechanical, Industrial, Biomedical Engineering, or related discipline Strong interest in medical device product development and design Hands-on and self-motivated with strong problem-solving abilities Excellent verbal and written communication skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams Experience with SolidWorks or other CAD software is preferred 3D printing experience is an asset Knowledge of engineering drawings and prototyping is an asset Experience in a manufacturing or regulated environment is considered an asset We will review applications as they are received.
