Purpose of your Position - Non Union
Classification Summary - Union
A Traffic Technician provides preliminary planning, design and management solutions for all City transportation network, traffic safety and roadway development activities.
Duties - Union
-
Evaluates traffic collision data, traffic volumes, specific site conditions/constraints and other factors; recommends corrective action(s) to improve design and safety of traffic operations (i.e. signal timing/coordination) and transportation networks.

Coordinates installation activities, ensuring that roundabouts, traffic signals, signs, pavement markings and all traffic control devices are consistently and correctly applied. Prepare traffic orders for installation of regulatory traffic control devices.

Coordinates the implementation of roadway geometry changes, traffic calming devices, traffic re-routing, road and traffic lane or sidewalk closures, etc.

Responds to various inquiries from the public, other City departments, consultants and external organizations regarding traffic operations/safety and transportation issues (i.e. road improvements, parking, traffic control devices, Bylaws, etc.)

Responds to unsafe traffic issues, potential hazards and neighbourhood traffic complaints, ensuring effective and timely communication with the public and affected agencies (ICBC, MoTI, SD23, RCMP).

Reviews development applications and provides solutions for various mobility and transportation related deficiencies.

Reviews transportation assessments and updates traffic volume maps with new data.

Reviews real estate purchases or disposals, ensuring there are no conflicts with transportation departments plans.

Prepares a variety of technical drawings, concept plans and reports including road right-of-way, road alignment, land acquisitions, etc. Applies an in-depth knowledge of traffic engineering and roadway design best practices, utilizing AutoCAD, Synchro, HCM2000 and other design and modeling software.

Reviews and coordinates traffic signal infrastructure and budget estimates for upgrades with the traffic signal electrical group.

Supports day to day operations of the traffic signal system and ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) components. Coordinate other agency (MoTI and BC Transit) activities that link through this system.
