##Position Description

Purpose

As a working Gardener, under the direction of the Grounds Foreman or Horticultural Technician, depending on the scope of work, the purpose of this job is to perform ground maintenance and horticultural duties at school sites.

Accountability

The job is accountable for performing all duties in accordance with CBE and legislated safety practices and procedures to ensure own safety as well as the safety of CBE staff and students.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the care of trees and shrubs and renovating turf and ornamental areas.
  • Prunes trees and shrubs and participates in general landscaping projects.
  • Participates in and provides supervision as well as job training to a small work crew.
  • Ensures that work is performed in compliance with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety regulations and CBE policies and procedures.  Models appropriate conduct and behavior when carrying out duties in a student environment and working with school staff.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment as necessary for ground maintenance and snow removal.
  • Assists in the effective training of staff in the proper use of equipment and vehicles.
  • When required, oversees and assists in the proper use, notification, and application of pesticides.
  • Remains current with trends and procedures regarding pesticide use as well as the implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles.  In accordance with assigned schedules, inspects school grounds and equipment.
  • Completes routine ground maintenance as required. Prepares related reports as required.
  • When requested, assists the Horticultural Technician in determining work priorities, schedules, and planning for improvements on school sites.
  • Ensures there is minimal impact on the learning environment by scheduling the work to suit the customer/school.
  • Perform other duties as required to achieve organizational goals.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma
  • Journeyman Landscape Gardener Certificate or equivalent.
  • Alberta Air Brake Endorsement (or ability to obtain within first 6 months of employment).
  • Alberta Pesticide Authorized Assistant Certification (or ability to obtain within first 6 months of employment)
  • Two years of related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of directly related experience and directly related education may be considered.
  • Previous supervisory experience is an asset.

  • Ability to operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner
  • Ability to understand written and oral directions

  • Time management and organizational skills

Note:

  • Must provide a current driver’s abstract.
  • Must become certified in TDG and WHMIS.
  • This position may be required to work outside in various weather conditions and temperatures and may involve repeated physical movement and exertion.
