About the role

Purpose Detailed Job Description This position is responsible for assessing, advising and assisting with various health & safety systems/programs, standards, procedures and guidelines utilized at the Mine Site, to ensure the health, safety and welfare of employees, contractors and any other personnel who may be affected by our operations.

ACCOUNTABILITY The incumbent is accountable to the Senior Safety Advisor and may have direct accountability for project teams/individuals as required.

Responsibilities & Performance Standards

  • Participate in the development, implementation and monitoring of health and safety systems/programs, standards, procedures and guidelines. Assist in developing an implementation plan, complete with auditing and follow-up components.
  • Conduct field audits and inspections; assist in identifying required actions and follow-up to ensure completion. Identify and implement various other measures and checks including safety meeting completion, task observations, etc.
  • Review and evaluate new and changing Provincial regulations/legislation and their impact on the Company.
  • Administer the Incident Investigation and Reporting process and perform additional tasks as per Supervisor’s direction.
  • Assist in the return to work program for injured workers.
  • Monitor and when required, participate in, safety meetings, audits, hazard assessments, etc.
  • Develop and conduct Health & Safety Training, as required.
  • Develop, maintain and implement related Emergency Response Plans, including mutual aid relationships with other organizations.
  • Support Mine Emergency Response Teams, as required

Qualifications Education

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • National Contraction Safety Officer (NCSO) certified.
  • Emergency Response experience is an asset.

Experience A minimum of 5 years of industrial exposure with previous safety and/or training experience. Experience in an operational mining environment is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Sound knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Regulation and Code
  • Knowledge and familiarity with mining.
  • Excellent coaching, mentoring and facilitation skills through the promotion of an enthusiastic and positive attitude.
  • Skilled in developing and implementing policy and procedures
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skill
  • Skilled at developing and maintaining a sound working relationship with subordinates
  • Ability to be productive both individually and in a team setting

Physical Requirements The incumbent needs to:

  • handle loads up to 10 kg. in weight
  • maintain a license and operate a vehicle requiring a Class 5 license
  • concentrate for over 60 consecutive minutes
  • work in environmental extremes for over 60 consecutive minutes
  • sit for over 60 consecutive minutes
  • perceive fine visual detail
  • stay alert during periods of inactivity for more than 60 minutes
  • Perform in fast-paced settings, prioritizing tasks as needed
  • Able to climb flights of stairs and long conveyors with ease regularly

WORK ENVIRONMENT The incumbent works at the CST Canada Coal Mine Site facility on an EDO schedule where the individual will work 9-hour days and get every second Friday off to help facilitate work/life balance. This position is based in Grande Cache, Alberta. Please be advised there are no camp facilities available. The commute from Grande Cache is approximately 20 km on Highway 40 North. Overtime and being on stand-by or ready for call-outs are essential requirements of the position due to the nature of the work. He/she is in an office setting 20% of the time, in a field setting 80% of the time. Travel may be required outside the work area in order to attend conferences, courses or meetings.

As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to comply with pre and post-employment drug and alcohol testing as per the Drug and Alcohol Policy. Personal protective equipment will include the use of an approved hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, hearing protection and protective clothing and gloves.
