About the role

At the Calgary Food Bank our mission is “to make food accessible to everyone in our city”. Our core belief is that no one in our community should go without food, and this continues to serve as our guiding principle for the future. We are the first line of emergency food support for people facing crisis and served over 200,000 Emergency Food Hampers to our community last year. We also provide over 80 partner charities throughout the city with food. As an organization, we pride ourselves on being client centered, community focused, and committed to excellence in both our operations and culture.

We are currently recruiting a community-minded, team-oriented individual to join our Community Engagement team as a Community Engagement Assistant, Summer Student.

The Summer Student: Community Engagement Assistant will provide vital support to the Community Engagement team performing administrative tasks, data management, and playing a support role during community events and special projects. This role is ideal for a motivated individual passionate about community service and interested in gaining hands-on experience in non-profit operations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist with data-entry and data-transformation projects using Salesforce.
  • Attend and support the coordination, facilitation, and delivery of community events on behalf of the Calgary Food Bank.
  • Contribute to the development of external communication materials, including drafting copy and assisting with basic design tasks.

Key Tasks

  • Set up, tear down, and manage materials for community events.
  • Accurately enter contact and gift information in the CRM.
  • Process incoming donations, including handling credit card transactions over the phone, while maintaining a high standard of donor service.
  • Perform general administrative duties and special projects as needed to support the Community Engagement and Development teams.

Decision-Making and Leadership Expectations

  • Confidently handle donor inquiries, always ensuring positive and supportive interactions.
  • Work independently while also collaborating effectively with team members when the situation calls for it.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Previous experience with data entry and data management at a beginner or intermediate level.
  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service in a professional environment.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong professional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365; experience with CRM platforms such as Salesforce is considered an asset.
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel within Calgary for community events as required.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements if any:

Working conditions are normal for an office environment and may require occasional visits to the warehouse. Candidate must be able to be on feet for extended periods of time, lift and carry items and do some walking in preparation for events.The candidate must have a vehicle to provide support at events. The qualified candidate must be available to work outside of normal business hours including weekends on occasion and have access to a reliable vehicle.

Health & Safety

A Calgary Food Bank employee, volunteer, contractor, agency employee, or other person working on site, will follow the duties and responsibilities imposed by OHS legislation. In addition, they will comply with the policies, procedures and rules developed by the Calgary Food Bank to perform jobs, tasks or actions in a safe and healthy manner. All employees and volunteers are responsible for the health and safety of all persons that visit them while working. Additionally, employees and volunteers who lead tours are responsible for the health and safety of their tour groups while in the building.

The successful fulfillment of these defined Health and Safety Roles and Responsibilities will be evaluated as part of the annual performance appraisal process for employees. As an employee of the Calgary Food Bank, you will abide by all Health & Safety requirements to ensure everyone’s safety.

Some of your duties include the following:

  • Participate in ensuring ongoing cleanliness of the CFB facility
  • Safe and proper use of equipment
  • Participate in ensuring safe food handling procedures are followed
  • Comply with all Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Ensure accident/incidents reports are properly completed
  • Complete Health and Safety Training as required

Anticipated hours of work: Monday-Friday, 40.00 hours per week including mandatory half an hour lunch break.

Please note that as the Government of Canada has funded this job through the Canada Summer Jobs Program, applicants must be between the ages of 15-30 and legally entitled to work in Canada. This includes Canadian Citizens, permanent residents, or persons on whom refugee protection has been conferred. International students are not eligible.
