About the role

The Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Medicine Institute (SREMI), housed within Sinai Health, a fully affiliated University of Toronto (U of T) health science center, is seeking applicants for the inaugural Wolf Lebovic and Harry Lebovic Chair in Emergency Medicine Addiction and Mental Health.

The successful candidate must be eligible for a full-time clinical (MD) appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor within the University of Toronto Temerty Faculty of Medicine. The term of the Chair position is 5 years with the opportunity for one 5-year renewal following a successful review. Applications will be accepted until June 8, 2026 or until filled. The anticipated start is September 1, 2026.

Description of Chair Activities:

The successful candidate will support the continued development and expansion of collaborative, comprehensive strategies for improving clinical care through the advancement of research and education for the treatment of addiction and mental health conditions in the context of emergency medicine. It is expected that Sinai Health will help establish the benchmarks for best practice and demonstrate improvement in outcomes for these patients. The Chair will also be responsible for developing and overseeing a program of training and research for learners from across Canada and internationally.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

Qualified physicians with experience conducting research and developing innovative models of care in the emergency department (ED) setting are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to emergency physicians with relevant formal graduate training (MSc or PhD) and an established program of research or education scholarship. The successful candidate must be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). The successful applicant should have leadership experience and an established track record of achievement in the collaborative ED treatment of substance use and mental health conditions research, education and creative professional activity. The successful candidate should be recognized as a national or international expert in their field, and will be expected to develop a successful academic strategic plan and project funding strategy for ED based addiction and mental health research. Academic excellence will be assessed by review of applicants’ peer-reviewed publications, research grants, invitations to and presentations at significant conferences and events, awards and accolades.

The Chair holder's remuneration will be commensurate with their qualification and experience. Compensation will be derived primarily through the applicable clinical practive plan, in accordance with departmental and institutional policies.

The position includes protected time for research and academic activities (approximately 0.3 FTE), supported through the Chair, along with dedicated programmatic support to establish and grow research and training activities.

The Chair will be based at Mount Sinai Hospital. If the Chair holder is an emergency physician, they will be expected to join the ED academic practice plan and will be entitled to additional support aligned with their academic and clinical contributions. Applicants from other relevant disciplines (e.g., Addiction Medicine, Psychiatry) will likewise be expected to hold appointments within their respective departments and participate in applicable practice plans and organizational structures, with support commensurates with their roles and responsibilities.
