About the Role:

Are you looking for a meaningful summer job where you can make a real difference? The YMCA of Northern Alberta is looking for a motivated, caring, and safety-minded individual to join our team as a Health and Safety Summer Program Coordinator.

In this role, you’ll help make camp a place where everyone can have fun and feel safe. You’ll support camp staff by checking facilities and equipment, identifying and communicating potential safety concerns, and assisting with first aid and incident response when needed. You’ll also work closely with the Health, Safety, and Child Protection (HSCP) Manager to lead safety initiatives, complete audits, and take on a special project that strengthens safety practices across our camps.

This role is not only active, but also tech forward! With plans to launch e-sports modules for campers, integration of technology to streamline processes, and digital communication channels - there are plenty of opportunities to grow your digital skills in the workplace.

This position is a great fit for individuals from any background or field of interest who want to develop leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills in a hands-on setting. You’ll gain valuable experience in teamwork, safety awareness, and decision-making — all while enjoying an active, community-focused summer.

This is a full time contract position from June 8, 2026 to August 21, 2026.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote and live the YMCA mission and values by creating an inclusive, respectful, and positive environment for everyone.
  • Champion safety at camp by reviewing and improving safety practices, attending training sessions, and helping ensure protocols are followed during all activities.
  • Conduct weekly site visits to YMCA day camps and child care centres, observing, recording, and reporting on safety practices to help keep every space fun and safe.
  • Support team communication by preparing safety updates, organizing reports, and helping coordinate information between teams.
  • Identify areas where technology can be integrated into processes to best streamline and enhance staff and member experiences - including digital, AI, or tech integrations.
  • Respond to safety concerns by identifying potential risks and taking quick action to maintain a safe environment for campers, staff, and volunteers.
  • Encourage camper growth and awareness by promoting safe, healthy habits and supporting their development in spirit, mind, and body.
  • Build positive relationships with campers, parents, and YMCA staff through a proactive, friendly, and dependable approach.
  • Model leadership and teamwork by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, contributing to ongoing safety projects, and supporting a fun, inclusive camp culture.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Able to obtain a Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and aptitude to learn new systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with professionalism.
  • Access to reliable transportation to visit multiple Y locations across the Edmonton region
  • Administration experience is an asset but not required.

Canada Summer Jobs Grant Participant Eligibility

  • No older than 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada
