Elk Island Public Schools Central Services building is located in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the Division, Central Services is comprised of eight departments, in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive, Communication Services, Facility Services, Student Transportation, Human Resources, Financial Services, Supports for Students and Information Technologies.

JOB SUMMARY
The Foreperson is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and coordination of maintenance and operations activities across Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) facilities. The role ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of maintenance services by supervising a multi-disciplinary team of trades, maintenance staff, and contractors.
The position is accountable for planning and prioritizing work, allocating resources, monitoring performance, and ensuring compliance with safety, regulatory, and operational standards. The Foreperson oversees administrative systems, work order management, and documentation, and fosters a collaborative, respectful, and high-performing work environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintenance & Operations
- Workflow Management: Plan, prioritize, and assign work orders via CMMS to ensure timely completion.
- Project Oversight: Supervise construction and maintenance projects to meet safety, quality, and budget standards.
- System Monitoring: Inspect infrastructure and equipment performance; coordinate necessary repairs, renovations, or upgrades.
- Contractor & Supply Chain: Oversee contractor performance, manage parts inventory, and procure equipment and supplies.
- Scope Creation: Engage and procurement of contractors.
- Compliance: Ensure all work meets building codes, fire regulations, and permit requirements.
Staff & Contractor Leadership
- Team Supervision: Lead a multi-disciplinary team by setting expectations, monitoring performance, and managing attendance/conduct.
- Development: Provide coaching, mentorship, and training; assist with recruitment and onboarding.
- Conflict Resolution: Address stakeholder concerns and resolve internal conflicts or miscommunications promptly.
- Culture: Foster a respectful, efficient work environment and ensure team-wide professional development.
Safety & Administration
- Safety Compliance: Enforce OHS standards and safe work practices through regular inspections and safety gear training.
- Financial Oversight: Manage purchase orders, invoices, and timesheets; track expenses and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Reporting: Maintain accurate documentation and generate reports on activities, budgets, and regulatory compliance (ATIA/POPA).
Communication & Coordination
- Stakeholder Liaison: Act as the primary contact for school administration, departments, and external agencies regarding maintenance timelines.
- Guidance: Deliver training and presentations to staff on departmental procedures and safety protocols.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Minimum Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Journeyperson ticket/certification in relevant fields.
Preferred: Dual ticketed or Red Seal Endorsement in Electrical, Carpentry, HVACR, Plumbing or related trade. Construction Safety training. Leadership for Safety Excellence (LSE) training.
Experience
- 3-5 years of related experience.
- 1 year of supervisory experience.
- Experience in a school division or in a municipality
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong knowledge of maintenance operations, safety standards, and quality control.
Demonstrated leadership and staff management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Advanced problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to plan, prioritize, and coordinate multiple work activities and resources. Ability to prioritize work and establish schedules to meet deadlines.
- Ability to assist with budgets, schedules, and coordinate with external vendors.
- Ability to successfully work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, web-based applications, and emerging technology.
- Familiarity in purchasing, contracts, and budget.
Qualifications, Certifications and Designations
Valid Alberta Driver’s License in good standing as per the requirements of the Elk Island Public Schools Vehicle Manual and access to a reliable vehicle.
- First Aid Certification.
