About the role

Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

Dr. Erin Millions (Department of History) is seeking a Senior Research Assistant to support the project Métis Histories in the British Empire. Dr. Millions’ research examines various aspects of Metis histories in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Senior Research Assistants are normally University of Winnipeg senior undergraduate or graduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study.

The Senior Research Assistant will undertake archival research including reading and transcription of documents written in cursive writing; analysis of archival documents; report writing; data management; and other duties as assigned. The Senior Research Assistant must be able to work independently to prioritize, plan, and organize their work to complete assignments in a timely manner under parameters defined by the supervisor. Most work will be conducted remotely but some on-site archival research is required.

The Senior Research Assistant must complete up to 160 hours of work between May 4, 2026 and June 30, 2026. The successful applicant must provide a schedule of work at the beginning of the work period that outlines their work dates and hours between May 4, 2026 and June 30, 2026.

Duties

  • Conduct archival research at the Archives of Manitoba, or other archives as required.
  • Conduct archival research from digitized primary sources.
  • Transcribe historical documents.
  • Create and maintain data management systems.
  • Prepare historical reports based on archival research and secondary literature.
  • Perform routine clerical and administrative duties to support research activities.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Advanced training in Metis history at the senior undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Can read cursive writing.
  • Experience conducting archival research primary source documents.
  • Experience conducting archival research at the Archives of Manitoba.
  • Excellent academic writing skills.
  • Minimum of 24 credit units of History, with at least 9 credit units at the 3000-level or above. Identify relevant courses in your application.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Must have access to a computer.

The period of work will be from May 4, 2026 to June 30, 2026 and the estimated total hours of work will be 160 HOURS.
