About the role

Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Academic Affairs, Nursing and HHR Workforce Initiatives, the Extern Coordinator supports the planning, onboarding, orientation, training and integration of key Health Human Resources (HHR) streams, such as Externs, Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) completing their Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) and newly graduated nurses within the model of care at Michael Garron Hospital. In addition, the role serves as a part-time coordinator for Nursing Innovation Program to support the coordination of program activities and engagement of nurses, learners and research externs in practice-based research and innovation projects.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the onboarding, training and integration of Externs and IENs across organizational and unit contexts
  • Designs and delivers evidence-informed orientation and learning resources aligned with organizational and unit policies, procedures and roleexpectations
  • Supports role transition through unit orientation, workflow integration and ongoing coaching to strengthen clinical competence and decision-making
  • Collaborates with unit teams, preceptors, and leadership to support Extern and learner performance, safe patient care and overall experience
  • Contributes to program development, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement, including feedback collection and outcome measurement
  • Support corporate nursing orientation, including assisting with session set up, delivery, station-based learning and completion of learner feedback and evaluation processes
  • Support the operations of research and quality improvement (QI) activities within the Nursing Innovation Program

Education

  • Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support required.
  • Certification in research ethics core principles and guidelines required, including Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS 2).

Qualifications

  • Patient and Family-Centered approach to clinical practice
  • Demonstrates excellent communication, collaboration and leadership skills
  • Interest in and experience with mentoring, preceptorship and adult learning
  • Previous teaching experience (preceptor, clinical instructor, Faculty Advisor, and/or Course Instructor) with students/learners preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to provide structured feedback and conduct evaluations to assess knowledge acquisition, skill development, retention, and application in practice
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and evidence-based practice and clinical practice excellence
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in quality improvement in healthcare practice settings
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in acute care in medicine, surgery, maternal newborn and child, critical care and/or emergency areas, preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in healthcare research (e.g., research assistant, research coordinator) required
  • Good work and attendance record is required
