Business Analyst

The Halifax Port Authority is seeking a Business Analyst to help drive cargo and trade growth at the Port of Halifax through insightful data analysis and strong business partnering. In this role, you will use data to analyze historical performance, industry trends, and operational flow, translating complex information into actionable insights that support commercial development, intermodal optimization, and informed decision-making.

Reporting to the Director, Intermodal Optimization, and working closely with the Trade Data Analytics Lead, this role serves as a critical analytical bridge between trade performance, intermodal operations, and HPA’s broader commercial objectives. What You'll Do:

  • Analyze internal and external commercial, trade, and operational data to identify trends, opportunities, and performance gaps
  • Develop, maintain, and evolve HPA’s business intelligence tools, including dashboards, balanced scorecards, and performance reports
  • Maintain a comprehensive and accurate database of the port’s commercial and intermodal operational activities
  • Produce clear, data-driven reports, visualizations, and recommendations to support decision-making across the organization
  • Conduct flow forecasting, identify operational bottlenecks, and support initiatives to improve intermodal fluidity
  • Ensure data integrity, consistency, and usability across BI dashboards, SharePoint trade reports, carrier stakeholder reports, and website content
  • Translate operational and trade data into business-relevant insights for internal leaders and external stakeholder discussions
  • Support responses to customer and partner data requests (e.g., BCOs, NVOCCs) with accurate, decision-oriented analysis
  • Maintain and update intermodal performance reports and Port Operations Centre data on the HPA website
  • Collaborate closely with teams across HPA to support cross-functional analysis, projects, and continuous improvement initiatives

What You Bring:

  • A university degree in Business, Computer Science, Economics, or a related field, with at least one year of relevant practical experience
  • Strong data analysis skills, including advanced proficiency in Excel and MS Office
  • Experience with SQL, Python, R, or similar programming languages, and data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau
  • Familiarity with the Azure environment is considered an asset
  • Experience or exposure to supply chain management, intermodal operations, or project management is an asset
  • Data analytics certification or a relevant professional designation is an asset
  • Excellent critical thinking skills with the ability to apply analytics in a business context
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders
  • A collaborative, team-oriented mindset, balanced with the ability to work independently and resourcefully
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and time-management skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Comfort working under pressure to meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
