About Us:

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service in the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General is responsible for the investigation of all unexpected, unnatural, and unexplained deaths to improve the health, safety, and quality of life of the citizens of Saskatchewan.

The Opportunity:

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is seeking a highly skilled and motivated professional to be an integral member of the senior management team of the Saskatchewan Coroners Service. As the Deputy Chief Coroner, you will provide leadership, direction, and support to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of services relating to the investigation, education, and prevention of unexpected, unnatural, and unexplained deaths in the province.

Reporting to the Chief Coroner, you will:

  • Manage various areas of the provincial coroners program providing ongoing strategic advice and recommendations, and developing and initiating policies and work standards relating to coroner investigations and inquests;
  • Develop, implement and evaluate multi-disciplinary strategies to advance the prevention mandate of the SCS;
  • Lead and provide direction, guidance, support, and training to coroners, including being part of the management team that provides provincial on-call telephone support after business hours to coroners, police, health professionals and families;
  • Manage the ongoing maintenance and development of the coroners case management system and ensure the effective use of human and financial resources interfaces with government agencies, police, pathologists, physicians, media, and other stakeholders to deliver efficient and effective services;
  • Work collaboratively and build consensus with a diverse group of stakeholders (e.g., officials from government, law enforcement and the health sector) to establish and maintain effective working relationships and ensure the proactive management of common issues potentially impacting the provincial coroners program;
  • Lead a team of professionals, including developing and monitoring individual work plans to ensure achievement of quality and timely results;
  • Participate on intra and inter ministry working groups and national committees related to the coroners program and government outcomes;
  • Identify, assess, and resolve issues and conflicts with a diverse group of people and stakeholders;
  • Manage the Saskatchewan Coroners Service's access to information and protection of privacy obligations; and
  • Hold an appointment as Coroner and act in the absence of the Chief Coroner, including exercising all judicial, legislative, and managerial responsibilities of that position.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Demonstrate strong strategic thinking and planning skills, combined with sound judgement to anticipate sector and government-wide issues and interests, and provide strategic advice that informs executive decision making;
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills required to manage projects, collaborate, build consensus, and lead change;
  • Demonstrate a proven ability to lead, team build and collaborate, with a reputation for integrity and a focus on service excellence and innovation;
  • Think critically and view issues and challenges from multiple perspectives to understand and communicate big picture implications and provide detailed advice and recommendations to senior management, coroners, and stakeholder groups;
  • Be results-oriented; and
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills to develop briefings, reports, and present issues to senior government officials, coroners, and stakeholder groups.

You will possess knowledge of:

  • Investigative principles and techniques, in addition to medical and forensic matters;
  • Government structure, protocol, policies, and procedures including decision-making, political, legislative, and budget development processes;
  • Public policy analysis and development; and
  • Performance management and accountability processes, approaches, and objectives.

Typically, the knowledge, skills and abilities for this position will be obtained through a post-secondary education in law, criminology, administration, or a health-related discipline supplemented by several years of proven management experience.

A valid Saskatchewan driver’s license is required since occasionally, some travel will be required.
