We are seeking a Senior Property Accountant to join our Accounting team during an exciting period of growth. In this role, you will play a key part in supporting the accurate and timely financial reporting for our expansive portfolio of real estate assets across Canada.

This is a critical position within our finance function that strengthens financial integrity, enhances reporting quality, and provides insight that supports strategic and operational decision making. You will serve as a trusted partner to Property Operations while upholding the highest standards of accounting accuracy, compliance, and internal control.

In addition to the duties typically expected of a senior accounting professional, responsibilities will include:

Real Estate Portfolio Reporting

  • Prepare quarterly and annual income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
  • Lead quarter end and year end close processes including review of journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and amortization schedules.
  • Maintain and monitor the general ledger and chart of accounts to ensure integrity and proper classification of transactions.
  • Prepare and review working papers that meet audit ready standards and support external reporting requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual operating budgets and capital plans, providing detailed variance analysis and corrective recommendations.
  • Oversee property tax filings and recoveries, validating assessments and ensuring accurate recovery in accordance with lease agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, company policies, and applicable accounting standards.

Financial Oversight and Operational Partnership

  • Partner with property management teams to translate financial results into clear, practical insights.
  • Provide guidance on revenue recognition, expense treatment, capitalization policies, and reserve management.
  • Support cash flow forecasting and working capital management.
  • Analyze trends in operating performance, capital activity, and maintenance spending to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Lead process standardization efforts to strengthen close discipline and reporting consistency.
  • Champion technology enabled reporting enhancements to improve data quality, transparency, and scalability.

Governance, Controls, and Continuous Improvement

  • Strengthen internal controls and ensure documentation aligns with audit and compliance expectations.
  • Support external audit processes, including preparation of schedules and response to technical inquiries.
  • Contribute to process redesign initiatives that improve efficiency while maintaining control integrity.
  • Leverage system capabilities within Yardi and related platforms to enhance reporting accuracy and automation.

Leadership and Special Projects

  • Provide mentorship and technical oversight to junior accounting team members, reviewing work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Contribute to portfolio transitions, acquisition integrations, and system enhancements from a financial reporting perspective.
  • Participate in cross functional initiatives that elevate the overall capability of the finance organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
  • CPA designation is preferred.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge with demonstrated experience applying professional standards in practice.
  • Proven full cycle accounting experience within an industry environment considered a strong asset.
  • Experience reviewing and validating work completed by junior accountants and AP or AR staff.
  • Advanced analytical capability with the ability to interpret complex financial information and provide clear recommendations.
  • High level of integrity, professional judgement, and attention to detail.
  • Advanced proficiency with accounting systems, with Yardi experience considered a strong asset.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast paced, growth oriented organization
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and French is an asset

The approximate salary range for this role is $75,000 - $90,000 per year. Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors including skills, experience, educational attainment, professional designations, internal equity, and other job related requirements.
