Studio Assistant (THIRDSPACE)

Reporting to the Program Development Specialist, the Studio Assistant (THIRDSPACE) will provide hands-on support to the Summer Artist and Mentor in Residence, assisting with the production and research aspects of their creative work. The incumbent will work closely with the artist to facilitate their studio practice, offering both practical and theoretical assistance as required.
Summary of Responsibilities:

Assist in the preparation, fabrication, and assembly of artwork under the guidance of the Summer Mentor and Artist in Residence.

Provide logistical and material support for ongoing projects, including organizing and maintaining studio space, tools, and equipment.
-
Assist the Artist in Residence with research to support theoretical and conceptual aspects of the artists’ work, including gathering reference materials and compiling relevant resources.

Support the documentation of work in progress, ensuring accurate records of production methods, research findings, and technical developments.

Coordinate with OCAD U departments and external vendors to source materials and services essential to the artists’ practice.

Support the testing and development of new techniques or processes as required for specific projects.

Assist with studio visits, critiques, and public engagements related to the residency.

Support the Summer Artist and Mentor in Residence in other related duties that contribute to the successful operation of their studio practice.
Qualifications:
-
Current OCAD U undergraduate or graduate student
-
A background in fine arts, design, or a related discipline with demonstrated experience in studio practice.

Experience working with digital media production (sound recording and digital photography), fabrication with CNC/ laser cutting, basic 3D design (e.g. Sketchup) and silkscreen printing are considered assets
-
Familiarity with various materials, fabrication processes, and contemporary artistic methodologies.

Strong research skills, particularly in theoretical and critical discourse related to art and design.
-
Ability to work collaboratively and adapt to the evolving needs of an artist’s practice.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
-
Experience handling artwork and using studio tools safely and effectively.

Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity and experience promoting a respectful work and learning environment for students, staff, faculty and OCAD U community.
Compensation: OPSEU Unit 1, Appendix A, Grade A1; Step 3, $22.40 per hour
Hours of Work: A total of 57 contract hours; approximately 7 hours per week. This is a temporary part-time contract expected to begin June 1, 2026, and continue until July 31, 2026.
