Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

The Summer Youth Program Coordinator is focused on supporting, promoting, and enhancing well-being of youth through summer programs (including crafts, sports, games, music, cooking, homework stations, etc.) and other programs that are developed to meet the needs of youth from our community. The role will provide general support to various services in other areas of the Ministry Unit. The Summer Youth Program Coordinator.

Canada Summer Jobs Program requirements apply. Individuals who required employer-specific work authorization (e.g., international students on study permits) are not eligible under this program. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents. This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applicants must meet program eligibility requirements, including age and legal status criteria.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties.

  • As directed, develop, plan, run and coordinate program activities for youth (crafts, sports, games, music, cooking, homework stations, etc.).

  • Work in a team setting supporting various tasks and activities.

  • Recruit, schedule and provide direction to volunteers who can assist with the programs

  • Provide general assistance during summer fundraising campaigns.

  • Maintain strict confidentially of all matters pertaining to the program participants.

  • Adhere to policies and procedures relating to the programs.

  • Chaperon the students as the driver does drop offs and picks ups of the students for various programs.

  • Assist with different basic administrative tasks – photocopy activities, greeting visitors, supporting reception, forwarding visitors, etc. as required.

  • May keep a log of different activities.

  • Assists in the organization, maintenance, and general cleanliness of the activity areas.

  • Assist with facility general clean up and set up for different activities.

  • Provide general information to visitors.

  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Critical relationship management:
Internal: MU’s leadership and staff, donors, volunteers.
External: parents, volunteers and the general public

Managerial/technical responsibilities:
Reports directly to the Corps Officer.
Direct reports: none.

  • Periodically may act as a team lead - provides supervision and ensures adherence to quality standards for volunteers or temporary staff for special events/activities

Financial and material management:

  • Responsible for minor financial matters regularly; responsibility for wise use of own resources and authorized to spend and disburse small amounts through the use of a corporate charge card.
  • Minor material responsibilities.

The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with the salvation army’s mission statement, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.

Working conditions:

  • Working environment is typically in the corps building in generally agreeable conditions and some outdoor duties.
  • Some work over weekends and evenings may be required.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • May deal with upset people or challenging behaviours.

Education, Experience and Qualifications:

  • A combination of education and experience working with youth in activity based programs will be considered an asset.

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

  • Work in compliance with occupational health and safety act and regulations; abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

  • CPR, First aid and non-violent crisis training or willingness to complete once hired.

  • Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • At least three years of previous related experience Preferred.
  • At least one year of previous experience with broader community engagement (such as events or communications) Preferred
  • Knowledgeable about social media management and advertising
  • Experience working with a web-based volunteer database Preferred.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development to stay informed about community engagement trends and the organization’s mission and objectives

  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft office suite and editing software

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including strong conflict-resolution skills

  • Proven ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse population of staff, volunteers, and clients

  • Strong administrative, time-management, and organization skills

  • Current driver’s license with driver’s abstract

  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills

  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.

  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $42,042.00 to $52,561.60 with a maximum of $63,063.00.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
