School District #49 (Central Coast) is accepting applications from teachers with a demonstrated commitment to developing a positive student-centered learning environment. Interested teachers who are certified or who are eligible to become certified by the BC Ministry of Education, Teacher Regulation Branch are invited to apply.

Under the direction of the school principal and working closely with the Indigenous Education Team, your responsibility will be to:

  • plan, implement and coordinate Cultural and Art programming in all 8-12 classes throughout the District;
  • provide culturally relevant activities and dynamic cultural presentations to students;
  • plan, implement and coordinate district and school cultural events to increase the cultural competency of staff;
  • work collaboratively with all teachers to infuse Nuxalk Knowledge into the curriculum;
  • work collaboratively with staff on cultural program development;
  • network with Nuxalk community members, i.e. Elders, Staltmc and other knowledge keepers;
  • provide recommendations and support regarding Indigenous healing and wellness to increase the District's capacity in Indigenous ways of being;
  • demonstrate competence in traditional and contemporary Nuxalk culture;
  • demonstrate knowledge of First Nations instructional strategies;
  • provide sound knowledge of technologies and their educational application;
  • demonstrate sound knowledge of intervention skills for behavior and cognitive difficulties;
  • be able to work and interact positively and proactively with other teaching and support staff, Nuxalk Elders and the Nuxalk community at large.

A regular work plan will be established weekly in consultation with the Coordinator of Indigenous Education. You will be directly responsible to the Principal of Sir Alexander Mackenzie School.

Candidates are expected to have:

  • Knowledge of effective teaching practices and current BC curriculum;
  • Willingness to work with grade levels including 8-12;
  • Experience in working with First Nations Education;
  • Membership in the B.C. College of Teachers;
  • Experience in a cross cultural environment;
  • Ability and commitment to work collaboratively with students, staff, parents and community;
  • Be willing to submit to a criminal record check.

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Experience in teaching First Nation students;
  • Nuxalk ancestry.

The annual salary range for this position is $72,983 to $126,238 (which includes retention & recruitment allowance).
