Queen Margaret’s School is accepting applications for a Casual Cook to join our Food Services team. This position provides on-call support during the school year, primarily covering staff absences and assisting with larger catering and special events.

Position Overview
Reporting to the Executive Chef, the Casual Cook supports daily food preparation and service for students and staff. As a boarding school, Queen Margaret’s School provides breakfast, lunch, dinner, and daily snacks, and the kitchen plays an important role in the wellbeing and daily life of our community.

All applicants will be required to consent to a Criminal Record Check initiated by Queen Margaret’s School.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Cook a variety of meats, seafood, poultry, vegetables, and other food items
- Ensure food is prepared efficiently, safely, and to a high standard of quality
- Follow established recipes, portion sizes, cooking methods, and presentation standards
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary workstation
- Monitor food storage, rotation, and holding practices to ensure food safety standards are met
- Prepare serveries for service and assist with meal setup
- Occasionally serve students and prepare snack baskets as required
- Promptly report equipment issues or food quality concerns to the Sous Chef or Executive Chef
- Comply with all school policies, procedures, dress code, and health and safety requirements, including WorkSafeBC, VIHA, fire regulations, and health department standards
- Work across multiple kitchen stations as needed
Qualifications
Required:
- Demonstrated experience in a commercial or restaurant food service environment
- Positive, flexible, and reliable approach to work
- Knowledge of food safety practices and industry standards
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proven customer-service mindset and ability to represent QMS in a professional, enthusiastic, and positive manner
- Experience working in a diverse community with students, families, staff, and external partners
- Understanding of confidentiality and professional discretion
Working Conditions
- This is a casual, on-call position primarily covering sick calls and supporting large catering events with the possibility of becoming a temporary, part-time position
- Most shifts are scheduled between 6 AM and 7:30PM
- Evening or weekend shifts will be required, with advance notice provided whenever possible in addition to shifts throughout the summer
- Standing for extended periods of time
- Lifting heavy objects may be required
