As a Labourer (Electrical), you will be part of a dedicated team that provides operational support to traffic signal and roadway activities related to the safe movement of oversized and dimensional loads within the city. Working primarily during night shifts and in outdoor, live traffic environments, this position plays a key part in ensuring public and crew safety during transport activities. This position requires adherence to established safety procedures, effective communication, and the ability to work in all weather conditions to support public and worker safety. This position is scheduled for evening shifts, Monday through Thursday, offering a consistent night shift routine. Primary duties include:
- Manually rotate traffic signal structures to allow high loads to pass safely through signalized intersections.
- Conduct tailboard meetings, safety inspections, and permit checks to ensure safe operations and regulatory compliance.
- Coordinate with movers and pilot vehicles to ensure the safety of workers, motorists, and the public.
- Maintain clear and continuous communication with drivers and crew members using radios and mobile devices, responding to changing traffic, weather, and site conditions.
- Use hand tools to disassemble various traffic signal components for recycling.
- Pre-scout routes to identify potential infrastructure conflicts.
- Contribute to ongoing safety and process improvement initiatives.
- Maintain an organized storage area and ensure parts inventory is properly stocked.
Qualifications
- Less than a high school diploma with a minimum of 2 years of experience in a related labouring field.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending is required.
- Completion of, or ability to obtain, required certifications such as International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Work Zone or equivalent, First Aid, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG).
- Ability to follow verbal instructions, read permits, and follow safety procedures in a fast-paced work environment.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills to coordinate effectively with internal crews, police, utility providers, and contractors.
- High level of attention to detail, with the ability to stay aware of changing traffic, weather, and site conditions and respond safely.
- Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
**Working Conditions:**This position works night shifts, outdoors, and in all weather conditions, including active traffic environments.
Pre-employment Requirements
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
**Pre-employment Drug Test:**An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
