About the role

Summary

The individual in this position; reports to the Logistics Manager and is required to pick up and deliver hatching eggs as well as deliver live day-old chicks to customers across the Maritime Provinces. The truck driver's position is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift weights of up to 30lbs for extended periods during the loading and unloading of the truck.

The position requires individuals with a valid Class 1 driver’s license. Previous experience and a proven record driving a tractor trailer, straight truck, hauling live product as well as experience in keeping drivers' logs is preferred.

The truck must be cleaned and disinfected after deliveries are completed each day. As part of the vehicle maintenance the driver must do routine checks of lights, tires, fluid levels and oil. The Driver will follow the recommended service schedule and notify the Logistics Coordinator of any necessary repairs. The driver must work with the Logistics Coordinator on all maintenance and electronic logs.

Schedule

This is a full-time position working on average 40 hours a week. This position has a flexible schedule including days/evening/nights/weekends/holidays as required.

Position Accountabilities

  • Pick up hatching eggs at breeder barns in production, eggs must be handled with extreme care both on and off the truck to avoid excessive bumping and jarring which will reduce hatchability.
  • Moving equipment from one farm location to another.
  • Loading and unloading of truck.
  • Proper handling of chicks.
  • Support hatchery operations when needed.
  • Completenecessarypaperwork at the barn and the egg delivery slip for the hatchery.
  • Ensure carts of eggs are secured in truck prior to moving vehicle.
  • Monitor truck heat and ventilation.
  • After deliveries clean and disinfect truck body and cab, interior and exterior.
  • Comply with applicable legislation including safe operation, carriage of goods,driver'shours of service, occupational health and safety, transportation of dangerous goods, and weights and dimensions.
  • Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions; check that vehicle position iscorrectand any special loading equipment is properly positioned.
  • Check vehicles before driving them to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order.
  • Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damage tothe vehicles.
  • Maintain logs of working hours and of vehicle service and repair status, following applicable provincial and federal regulations.
  • Perform periodic inspections before, during, and after delivery to ensure thatthe loadis properly fastened downand issecure.
  • Deliverproductand proper paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Provide feedback tosupervisor regarding delivery problems or vehicle mechanical problems.
  • Handling of chicks and eggs with care.
  • Follow thedaily schedule and work directionof the Logistics Coordinator.
  • Clean boxesand support hatchery work asrequired.
  • Follow Hatchery and Road safety rules and guidelines.
  • Follow routeschedules, andreturntrucks to API property at the end of each shift asrequired.
  • Provide an environment free of animal cruelty,abuseand/or neglect for our poultry
  • Protect the organization’s value by keeping all protected and proprietary information confidential.
  • Practice biosecurity protocol.
  • Follow all safety processes and procedures.
  • All other assigned duties including various hatchery work.

Position Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent

  • Certification from recognized truck driving school or equivalent 3 years’ experience

  • Valid Class 1 driver’s license & Current Drivers Abstract

  • Driver Logs / E-Logs

  • Defensive Driving Course an asset

  • Pleasant & outgoing personality with exceptional customer service skills isa must

  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities

  • Strong work ethic

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to work with live poultry

  • Must be able to work with little supervision; must be self-directed

  • Ability to work a flexible rotating schedule

Working Conditions

The working conditions will be dusty at times with strong odours. Exposure to cold/heat with work conditions changing during seasons. Repetitive work/heavy lifting. Sitting for prolonged periods.
