TITLE: Dietary Services Cook
POSITION TYPE: Part-time (Non- Union)
SCHEDULE: 36 hours- Alternating weeks: Saturday/Sunday/Monday/Tuesday
REPORTS TO: Supervisor – Dietary Services
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Bob Rumball Canadian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf (BRCCED) is a provincial leader in the Deaf community. Our mission is to provide care and opportunities in a communication-rich environment that enhances the quality of life of those we serve. We are a highly motivated, collaborative team on a mission to improve the quality of life for those we serve. We take a person-centered approach that aims to support and make a positive difference in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Reporting to the Dietary Services Supervisor, the Cook is responsible for the provision of two meals per day as part of the organization’s Seniors’ Meal Plan, including a meal that includes the broader deaf community each Tuesday, Catering Services requests as well as assisting with other kitchen duties as required as part of the Dietary Services Team.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Maintains confidentiality and engenders trust
- Works with Dietary Supervisor to create nutritious, interesting menus
- Creates and maintains a positive atmosphere in the kitchen and in the dining room for the Seniors and fellow staff
- Demonstrate solid teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills
- Able to multitask and adapt to changing priorities
- Conflict Management and Resolution skills
- Sound listening, judgement and creative problem-solving abilities
- Has experience with, and enjoys baking
- Always Maintain Health and Safety best practices
- Provides support and assistance to clients in emergency situations
- Keep the kitchen area clean and hazard free
- Create and maintain a positive environment in the kitchen and in the Dining Room for Seniors and fellow staff
- Communicates menu to Clients & utilize feedback about their food preferences
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Dietary Services Supervisor
- May transfer to different locations based on business needs
QUALIFICATIONS
- 1 year food technology certificate or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years related experience
- Possesses and maintains Food Handler’s Certificate
- Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) or willing to learn
- Experience working with seniors
- Experience working with the deaf community is an asset
- Committed to continuing education
- Position may transfer to different locations based on business needs
- Superb interpersonal skills

About The Bob Rumball Canadian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf
The Bob Rumball Canadian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf was the first facility of its kind, and for over 30 years it has provided the Deaf Community a space without communication barriers. Within this space an educational, independent living, and a social environment for the Deaf has blossomed.
From its starting point as a community recreation facility, the Bob Rumball Centre has expanded into offering a range of specialized services to those within the Deaf Community that require support. These include seniors’, those with developmental, physical, health, or mental health issues, infants and young children, and newcomers to Canada.
These programs and services are often unique, and offer the access to care, education, and socialization that improves quality of life for Deaf people.
