About the role

Position: Registered Practical Nurse
Department: Orthopaedic Clinic/Ambulatory Care Clinic (ACU)

The Surgical Clinic operates several days a week in the Ambulatory Care Unit, handling minor surgical procedures, follow-up post-operative appointments and consultations. Day surgery patients (adults and children) receive pre and post-operative care in the day surgery department. A variety of services can have outpatient day surgery procedures: General surgery, Dental surgery, Ear, nose and throat, Orthopedics, Urology, Gynecology

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification/Experience/Knowledge:

  • Certified or willing to obtain certification through the Canadian society of orthopedic technologist required
  • Current Certificate of Registration ~ College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate is required (recent within the last twelve months)
  • Maintains Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT) registration and competence by attending in-services, workshops, conferences, physicians’ rounds etc.
  • Expert knowledge and application of aseptic technique in dressing change, removal of sutures, staples, pins and external fixators, setting up surgical field for injections and minor procedures
  • Provides education related to orthopedic treatments and follow-up care to patients and families

Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficient in the application of casting and orthopedic technologies
  • Follows hospital guidelines and standards for documentation including incident reporting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing quality customer service while dealing with the public.
  • Must be flexible, self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to interpret simple fractures and dislocations on x-ray films.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to handle a large diversified workload with often rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
  • Good attendance and work record required
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure their safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
  • Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.

The North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) is a unique healthcare organization with three primary roles. It provides acute care services to North Bay and its surrounding communities, it is the district referral centre providing specialist services for smaller communities in the area, and it is the specialized mental health service provider serving all of northeast Ontario

NBRHC has 389 beds and numerous outpatient and outreach services in North Bay and throughout the northeast region.

NBRHC is one of four major acute care hospitals serving northeast Ontario; the others being Sault Area Hospital, Timmins and District Hospital and Health Sciences North (Sudbury). The area is also served by small community hospitals like Mattawa and West Nipissing General hospitals.

NBRHC’s Regional Mental Health Services provides inpatient beds in North Bay and Sudbury and outpatient and outreach services that throughout the region—from Hudson Bay to Muskoka from Sault Ste. Marie to the Quebec border.
