What is Canada Summer Jobs?

Canada Summer Jobs is an initiative of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, which aims to provide flexible and holistic services to help all young Canadians develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition into the labour market. Job Summary

The Employment Clerk is responsible for assisting in the delivery of employment services geared to the needs of specific target groups. This position, in consultation with the Employment Services team, is responsible for supporting Employment Services clients and supporting program administration

Job Specific Responsibilities:
Direct Client Service

  • Provides information, resources and referrals to clients.
  • Supports clients in their job search using practical interventions based on client need, including but not limited to, resume support, on-line job search, on-line applications, mock interviews, etc.
  • Assists in promotional activities and client and employer outreach.
  • Monitors client attendance and reports as required.
  • Performs client follow-up as per program guidelines.
  • Learns about current issues and developments in the respective field.
  • Provides services in a welcoming and client centered manner.
  • Reduces barriers to access for the populations served by the program.

Administration and Clerical

  • Maintains electronic client records and protects the confidentiality of the information.
  • Covers reception as needed.
  • Performs administrative functions as required by the program.
  • Ensures all data is accurate and entered on a timely basis.
  • Collects statistics and prepares reports as required.

Teamwork and Collaboration

  • Maintain effective communication of information among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Attends and participates in team and general staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Participates in the evaluation component of relevant program.
  • Provides support to clients of team members as needed.

Qualifications:
Education

  • High School Diploma

Professional Experience

  • Customer service, preferably in a human service setting.

Key Competencies

  • Experience in organizing.
  • Experience in filing with a knowledge of classification methods including the alphabetic system.
  • Experience with office equipment.
  • Proficient in computer-based software applications.
  • Excellent proofreading skills and attention to detail.

Linguistic Profile (for Centres with French Language Service Designations)

  • Under the Centre’s designation to provide French Language Services
  • Based on New Avenues Linguistics Rating Scale: A+ (highest skill) to C- (lowest skill)
  • English (oral expression): A+ (required)
  • English (oral comprehension): A+ (required)
  • English (reading comprehension):  A+ (required)
  • Bilingual English/French preferred. Other languages an asset

Personal Suitability/Other Requirements

  • Communication skills, both oral and written, for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to work with detailed information over long periods of time.
  • Understanding and sensitivity to poverty and minority issues.
  • Ability to work Thursday evenings on a bi-weekly basis
  • Between the ages of 15 years and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the program, as per the requirements of Canada Summer Jobs
  • Is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, as per the requirements of Canada Summer Jobs
  • Is legally entitled to work in Canada, as per the requirements of Canada Summer Jobs

Founded by community members in 1979, we are one of about 60 non-profit community health centers across Ontario. We are run by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of 12 community members elected at our annual meeting.

Growing With Our Community:

In 1979 we opened our doors with 4 staff. Today, we have over 347 full and part time employees serving our local community and over 400 volunteers.
