The Temiskaming Hospital, located approximately 150 kilometres north of North Bay, is nestled upon the traditional territory of the Algonquin, Anishinaabe and Cree people along the beautiful shores of Lake Temiskaming.

TH offers a wide range of acute and post-acute care including emergency and intensive care, medical/surgical care, obstetrical, rehabilitation and complex/transitional care and palliative care services. In addition to the above, the Hospital offers laboratory, diagnostic imaging and mental health and addictions programs.

Current Recruitment Incentives:

Job Listings

The Occupational Therapist is responsible for reviewing and prioritizing patient referrals; performing assessments and implementing therapeutic interventions; ensuring care and safety of patients during all patient interactions; delegation of tasks to OTA’s, PTA’s and RA’s in accordance to the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario guidelines.

Affiliation: Union – OPSEU

Rate of Pay: $40.36 - $56.30 / hour

Hours of Work: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (Monday – Friday)

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy program and must be registered with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
  • Oral proficiency in French at an advanced or superior level is required
  • Certification in CPR (Basic Life Support-C)
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with patients, Professional Staff and other healthcare professionals
  • Thorough knowledge and proficiency in current OT assessments and interventions
  • Knowledge of recovery and demonstrated values consistent with a recovery-orientated approach
  • Ability to teach / coach using adult learning and strength-based models
  • Must have an excellent work record, including attendance.
  • Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization of fellow workers, patients, volunteers and visitors

Responsibilities:

  • Assesses and/or investigates all referrals received from assigned areas. Completes patient assessment using appropriate formats, outcome measures, and terminology according to the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario’s Standards of Practice and Temiskaming Hospital standards.
  • Establishes, plans, and implements patient programs. Ensures ongoing evaluation of patients and completes regular progress evaluations. Monitors effectiveness and progress of treatment program and decides when discharge is appropriate from occupational therapy.
  • Accepts increases and alterations in caseloads and discharges appropriately.
  • Interacts with other health care professionals, families, and significant others involved in the patient's care and ensures the most functional and beneficial patient program plan is devised and implemented. Educates patients and family members in the management of his/her concerns and physical and functional challenges.
  • Ensures facilities and required materials are available and prepared for treatment times. Monitors patient programs to ensure a safe working environment is maintained and that program changes are initiated and carried out, as required.
  • Completes all relevant documentation according to departmental standards set out by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO)’s standards for record keeping. Assures confidentiality of patient information in all interactions and documentation and follows the Public Hospitals Act and COTO regarding maintenance and flow of legal documents. Maintains relevant statistical information.
  • Pursues new developments, trends and techniques and where appropriate incorporates these into patient programs to ensure quality patient care. Assumes and shares

responsibility for the education of volunteers and allied health professionals regarding Occupational Therapy mandates and treatment techniques.

  • Reviews and revises procedures and methods of operation in conjunction with agreed upon improvement initiatives.

  • In conjunction with other departmental employees, ensures departmental manual updates, audits, statistical information tabulation and departmental procedures are maintained so that the department meets its accreditation standards.

  • Evaluates the impact of change on the department and communicates concerns to the Director of Clinical Services. Maintains communication with the Director of Clinical Services regarding departmental issues and activities, as needed.

  • Records hours worked and submits a report for payroll purposes.

  • Provides input concerning department budget, annual goals and objectives, and monthly variances as requested by the Director of Clinical Services.

  • Reports supply needs to Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA).

  • Maintains equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition. Reports to the Maintenance Department and/ or the Director of Clinical Services any faulty equipment or hazardous conditions of equipment to ensure safety of patients and staff

  • Serves as a preceptor for OT and OTA students.

  • Keep up-to-date with current hospital programs, Risk Management, WHMIS and Emergency Plans.
