Position: High School Science Team Lead - 1.0 FTE Join Our Team at STEM Innovation Academy STEM Innovation Academy High School is seeking exceptional educators who want to make a meaningful impact working with admin, teachers and students in Grades 10–12. About Us STEM Innovation Academy is a public charter school in Calgary serving Grades 7–12. Our High School campus, located in Calgary's University Innovation Quarter, serves 915 students in Grades 10–12 and continues to grow as one of Alberta's most in-demand STEM programs.

Our mission is to inspire the next generation to be knowledgeable creators, innovators, and responsible leaders. At the high school level, we combine rigorous academic programming with authentic STEM experiences, leadership development, and post-secondary pathways. Our Model of Instruction blends direct teaching and guided inquiry within a strong culture grounded in Character, Collaboration, and Curiosity.

  • Charter schools are 100% public. STEM IA receives the same per-pupil government funding as all public schools in Alberta.
  • There is no tuition. Aside from standard instructional fees common to public schools, there is no cost to attend STEM IA.

Required Education And Experience

  • Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate
  • Bachelor of Education Degree or equivalent recognized by Alberta Education
  • Experience in teaching Alberta High School Science across at least two different specializations (Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics)

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies of Team Leads

  • Team Leads at STEM Innovation Academy are teacher leaders who play an important role in strengthening collaboration, supporting professional practice, and contributing to a positive and effective school culture.
  • Working alongside colleagues rather than above them, Team Leads build trust through strong relationships, professionalism, and initiative. They help create clarity, consistency, and momentum within their departments, while serving as a key connection point between teams and administration in support of shared school priorities.
  • Team Leads bring credibility through strong subject matter expertise and a solid foundation in pedagogy, assessment, and classroom management. Their own instructional practice reflects high standards and sound professional judgment, allowing them to engage in meaningful professional conversations and support instructional improvement across the department. They foster collaboration, encourage reflective practice, and support consistent approaches to curriculum, assessment, and grading that benefit both teachers and students.
  • Team Leads are proactive, solution-focused, and committed to supporting others. They step forward when help is needed—often without being asked—navigate challenges and conflict with professionalism and empathy, and work to elevate those around them through mentorship, shared expertise, and recognition of strengths. Through their leadership, Team Leads strengthen both people and systems, helping departments function cohesively and continuously improve in service of the STEM Innovation Academy community.
  • Note: Team Lead positions at STEM Innovation Academy are offered on a two-year basis and are grounded in mutual interest, readiness, and school needs. Through regular reflection and annual review conversations, the role remains responsive, purposeful, and aligned with both individual leadership development and the broader goals of STEM Innovation Academy.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies of Science Teachers

  • Exemplary, evidence-based instructional practices that lead to student success.
  • Experience, confidence, skill, knowledge, and understanding of Alberta Science Program of Studies and depth of knowledge of Alberta Diploma Exam question types.
  • Strong ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with students, colleagues, and parents.
  • Collaborate closely with all Science teams of teachers to ensure alignment in teaching and assessment practices.
  • A willingness to support, mentor, and coach teachers within the department towards professional growth.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data to lead to continuous improvement in department.
  • Dedication to academic rigour and excellence.
  • Understanding and experience working on horizontal and vertical alignment.
  • Capacity to differentiate instructional practices, use effective student engagement strategies, blueprint assessments, and employ outcome-based assessment and reporting.
  • Innovator's mindset - willingness to take risks, adapt to new challenges, and support initiatives to grow future ready learners in Alberta.
  • Willingness to adapt and grow in a constantly evolving environment.
  • Competent in using online learning support tools such as MS 365 for Education, Schoology, GradeCam, etc.
  • Commitment to co-curricular activities at the school.

About STEM Innovation Academy

Primary and Secondary Education

We are a new grade 7-12 public charter school that offers programming that is unique in Alberta. The STEM Innovation Academy provides a well-rounded education with an emphasis on STEM topics - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. We have a global focus and the program prepares students to be innovators and problem solvers.

Not only do we infuse the existing science curriculum with leading edge content, we are creating new courses that allow students to explore topics like artificial intelligence, medical technology, cryptocurrency, digital media and design, and energy and environmental technology.

We are global in focus. Recognizing technology is the future of every industry, we work with post-secondary institutions and industry to ensure our content is leading-edge.
