Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:

  • High school completion with job‑related options plus two years = directly-related experience.

OR

  • Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline with no experience.
  • Some post secondary education is preferred.
  • A Bachelors degree in a related field is recommended (Cell or Molecular Biology, Genetics) is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience performing molecular biology tasks including DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, and Quantitative PCR is required.
  • Experience with mammalian tissue culture is required.
  • Experience with ordering supplies while adhering to and updating a budget is required.
  • Experience maintaining general lab equipment and performing general day-to-day lab maintenance is required.
  • Experience training staff and students in laboratory techniques and protocols would be an asset.
  • Experience with animal handling, breeding and in vivo experimentation would be an asset.
  • Experience with measurements of DNA menthylation by bisulfite sequencing or pyrosequencing would be an asset
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Organizational skills, thoroughness, accuracy and attention to detail are required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software is required. (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) is required.
  • Must be able to learn new laboratory techniques and perform them accurately is required.
  • Must have a philosophy that is compatible with animal-based research is required.
  • Must have good manual dexterity and good eyesight is required.
  • Must have ability to resolve and troubleshoot simple technical problems with basic lab equipment is required.
  • Must be well organized and capable of keeping detailed lab notes, records and data management is required.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team is required.
  • Ability to train staff and students in laboratory techniques and protocols is required.
  • Demonstrated technical skills in either molecular biology or animal husbandry is preferred.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge of statistical analysis software would be an asset (i.e. Excel, R.)

Key responsibilities

Responsibilities:

Supporting the Investigators in administrative tasks:

  • Drafting animal care, biosafety, and human ethics applications.
  • Ourchasing and ordering.
  • Collecting supporting documents and signatures for grant applications.
  • Tracking purchases and budgets from funding sources and coordinating purchases with the Investigator to ensure accurate budgeting and bookkeeping.
  • Coordinating lab meeting scheduling and booking.

Laboratory organization and management:

  • Coordinates with core facilities as needed.

    • general lab maintenance, including maintaining stock solutions.
  • Facilitates laboratory inspections by various governing bodies.

  • Arranges lab duties to keep the lab clean and organized, and communicates to the Investigator on completions of lab duties by all lab members.

Scientific reading and writing:

  • Stays up to date with research in the field by reading new/recent journal articles related to the research.
  • Compiles data in study report preparation, presents results, and participates in the preparation of scientific manuscripts
  • Attends regular lab meetings and local seminars relevant to current topic of research

Laboratory experiments:

  • Performs experiments using animals and mammalian cell culture in consultation with the Investigator
  • Assist students with experiments using small rodents, maintaining and monitoring experimental animals, and assisting with necropsies to collect tissues.
  • Uses pyrosequencing and real-time quantitative PCR to analyze DNA methylation and gene expression of several key genes of interest over a time-course.
  • Performs nucleotide and protein extractions, gel electrophoresis, and bisulfite conversion as required.
  • Standardizes, adapts and performs new experimental techniques as required for both in vitro and in vivo studies in consultation with the Investigator.
  • Collects, records and maintains experimental records and data in a highly organized manner.
  • Performs fluorescence and/or confocal laser microscopy and capture high quality digital images for subsequent analyses

Training of HQP:

  • Contributes to the training and supervision of junior lab members and students, particularly with respect to biosafety and chemical safety.
  • May be required to perform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
