About the role

Applications are invited for the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Sinai Health System (SHS), a full academic affiliate of the University of Toronto, comprised of Mount Sinai Hospital, Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital, Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute and Circle of Care. SHS combines acute care, complex and rehabilitative care, primary care, home care, and other community-based services to create an innovative and integrated continuum of care, meeting the needs of complex patients. We are seeking an experienced, contemporary leader, able to develop and implement a strategic vision, build teams and establish productive partnerships. The Department of Emergency Medicine at Sinai Health has a longstanding commitment to upholding the core Sinai Values of Service, Humanity, Discovery and Inclusivity and seeks a Chief of Emergency Medicine who can present a vision for operational effectiveness, social responsiveness, and collaborative engagement to sustain and expand the Department’s impact.

The successful candidate for Chief will also be eligible to hold the Sinai 100 Chair in Emergency Medicine. The Department of Emergency Medicine of Sinai Health System, which is also the departmental home of the Schwartz Reisman Emergency Medicine Institute includes 40 physician faculty members, all certified in Emergency Medicine, with academic appointments through the University of Toronto’s Department of Family and Community Medicine or Department of Medicine.

The Chief of Emergency Medicine is responsible for leading the Department in achieving operational and academic goals, including high quality clinical care, education, and research. The Department Chief will work with operational and medical leaders at Sinai Health and the University of Toronto to develop and implement a strategic action plan for the Department in alignment with Sinai Health’s Strategic Plan – Discovering and Delivering Life Changing Care, the hospital’s Quality Aims and the University’s priorities. The Department Chief will also work with the Sinai Health Foundation to develop and manage philanthropic funding, and manage and report on the use of funds. These deliverables are supported through a dyadic leadership structure with the Senior Clinical Program Director, and hospital support for a Deputy Chief role.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree, have or be eligible for licensure in Ontario, and hold advanced certification in Emergency Medicine from either the RCPS(C) or the College of Family Physicians of Canada. They should also be eligible for a senior academic appointment (Associate or Full Professor) in the Department of Family and Community Medicine or Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

They will be an emergency medicine role-model, with superior leadership qualities, strong operational management skills, and commitment to mentoring junior faculty and fostering partnerships within the hospital and the broader external community. They will be a respected clinician, with a commitment to the provision of the highest quality care, interprofessional and multilevel education, and have a proven track record and/or commitment to advancing research and scholarship. They will have a demonstrated ability to create and maintain a workplace and learning environment that is respectful, safe for all staff, trainees and patients.. They will foster a culture of equity, diversity and inclusion within the Department, maintain professionalism and emphasize physician well-being.

Remuneration for the role is commensurate with qualifications, experience and expected time commitment. The Chief of Emergency Medicine is expected to devote 3 days/week to the role, and to continue an active clinical practice. The position is for a 5-year term, renewable once, based upon a successful review.
