About the Role:
Kidco Construction is currently seeking an Apprentice Shop Welder. The Apprentice Shop Welder will play a crucial role in supporting the fabrication and assembly of metal structures and components within a construction environment. This position is designed to provide hands-on training and development under the guidance of experienced welders, enabling the apprentice to build foundational skills in various welding techniques and safety practices. The apprentice will contribute to the production of high-quality welded products that meet industry standards and project specifications. Through practical experience, the role aims to develop the apprentice’s ability to interpret blueprints, select appropriate materials, and operate welding equipment efficiently. Ultimately, the apprentice will grow into a skilled welder capable of independently completing complex welding tasks that support construction projects across Canada.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Preference given to applicants who have completed CTS and/or RAP programs.
- Additional preference is given to applicants who are registered Apprentices OR who have completed an AIT‑recognized pre‑employment welding program.
- Demonstrated basic knowledge of SMAW (stick), MIG, and oxy‑fuel welding processes.
- Ability to pass a pre‑employment welding test consisting of Flat and Horizontal positions (Vertical or Overhead considered an asset).
- Basic understanding of welding principles and safety practices.
- Basic ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
- Physical ability to perform manual labor, including lifting and standing for extended periods.
- Willingness to learn and follow safety regulations in a workshop environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience or coursework in welding or metal fabrication.
- Familiarity with welding equipment and tools.
- Introductory knowledge of metallurgy and material properties.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
Responsibilities:
- Assist experienced welders in preparing materials and equipment for welding tasks.
- Learn and apply various welding techniques such as MIG and stick welding under supervision.
- Interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to understand welding requirements.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment by following all safety protocols and procedures.
- Perform routine inspections of welded joints to ensure quality and adherence to standards.
- Participate in ongoing training sessions to develop welding skills and knowledge.
- Support the fabrication team by cutting, grinding, and assembling metal parts as needed.
Our Weekly Schedule:
- Monday-Friday: 8-10 hours/day
- Saturday: 8-10 hours/day
