Position Description
Reporting to the Secretary General, Governance and University Life, the incumbent plays a key role in the development and implementation of services, programs, and guiding frameworks to support SPU’s strategic ambitions.
The incumbent is primarily responsible for developing human resources strategies and recommending management approaches aligned with the organization’s needs. In this capacity, they advise leadership on all matters related to human resources management, labour relations, and total rewards (including payroll, benefits, and pension plans), and serve as a trusted advisor to both administrative and academic leaders.
A key strategic partner, the incumbent supports academic and administrative leaders in managing and mobilizing their teams, while promoting consistent, high-performing management practices suited to a continuously evolving environment. They ensure the interpretation and application of University policies and regulations and oversee the implementation of programs and procedures related to workforce planning, collective agreements, job classification, compensation and benefits administration, and other initiatives that support effective and culturally aligned HR management.
Guided by a commitment to continuous improvement, the incumbent advances HR practices toward more integrated models focused on enhancing employee experience and organizational performance. They lead the implementation of key initiatives aimed at strengthening engagement, attraction, and retention.
Finally, the incumbent develops and maintains strategic partnerships with business partners to ensure the effective delivery of human resources services and to position the HR function as a key driver of transformation and value creation within the University.
Ideal Profile
As the ideal candidate, you are a collaborative, values-driven, and bilingual leader, recognized for your strategic mindset, rigor, and ability to mobilize stakeholders around shared objectives. You operate with confidence in complex unionized environments, ideally within Ontario’s public sector, and bring demonstrated experience in collective agreement negotiations. You are adept at balancing vision, influence, and execution to deliver sustainable organizational impact.
You hold a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, or a related field, combined with a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience demonstrating progressive responsibility, as well as a professional designation (CHRL) or equivalent. You also possess strong knowledge of and hands-on experience with legislation and regulations applicable in Ontario, enabling you to operate confidently within the provincial legal framework.
A trusted partner to senior leadership, you demonstrate sound judgment, managerial courage, and strong political acuity in navigating sensitive issues. You are known for your ability to build strong relationships, work effectively across multidisciplinary contexts, and support teams through periods of transformation. Your experience conducting workplace investigations, including those related to harassment or similar complaints, reflects your rigor, fairness, and professionalism.
With a strong analytical mindset and results-oriented approach, you actively contribute to the evolution of human resources practices, placing employee experience, organizational performance, and alignment at the core of your work. You are distinguished by your professionalism, integrity, and discretion in all interactions.
