Position: Sessional Lecturer (1 Position - CUPE 3902, Unit 2)
CRE283H1S Writing About Music – It is often assumed that music is best experienced through listening, not through words. At the same time, the history of music writing reveals how reading and writing about music can transform the experience of listening to it. What constitutes good music writing? How has writing about music influenced musical trends, sub-cultures, artistic movements, and technologies? This course provides students with the opportunity to explore the history of writing about music, and to engage in its practice in various forms, such as fiction, journalism, and reviews. No prior training or expertise in music is required.
Expected course time: Wednesday, 3-5pm
Expected enrolment cap: 25
Dates of appointment: January 1, 2027, to April 30, 2027
Course Modality: In-person, Victoria College campus
Teaching Assistant: There is no TA support
The salary will be as per the CUPE agreement (e.g., September 2026 Sessional Lecturer rate is $9,997.47 including vacation pay).
Requirements:
- PhD or MFA
- Extensive teaching experience in seminar style classes, as evidenced by course
- evaluations
- Extensive publication record, including books and articles demonstrating expertise in writing about music. Professional experience in the music industry preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
