About the role
Job Summary:
The Manager, Intellectual and Business Development, identifies and protects intellectual property (IP) and technologies of clinical or commercial value arising from research activities at PHSA and its Agencies. This position is responsible for playing a lead translational role in enabling commercialization of IP to maximize benefit to cancer patients. The Manager oversees technology assessment, patent protection and prosecution, facilitating internal/external scientific collaborations, identifying external funding to support technology development and securing licensing opportunities.
Duties/Accountabilities:

Provides recommendations on IP protection and commercialization strategy for a portfolio of technologies disclosed to the Technology Development Office (TDO), by meeting with inventors and conducting patentability, freedom to operate, clinical need and business opportunity analyses.

Facilitates internal and external scientific and translational research collaborations by identifying scientists and groups with complementary research areas or expertise to enable validation of the organizations technologies and optimize the opportunity for clinical translation.

Protects IP disclosed following a favourable technology assessment, by drafting and filing provisional and non-provisional patent applications or applying for registration of copyrights and trademarks where applicable, in order to improve the value of PHSA’s technologies for uptake and further development by commercial receptors.

Manages commercialization grant applications to government agencies by identifying candidate technologies, drafting commercialization sections of said grants, and managing the application process, to enable further maturation and validation of IP and to improve the likelihood of success for out-licensing.

Develops and maintains contacts with leaders in the research community, biotechnology industry, venture capital and government funding organizations, and legal representatives regarding IP strategies, locally, nationally and internationally.
Qualifications:
A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Ph.D. in a biology or health-related scientific discipline plus at least five (5) years of experience in a technology transfer role in a technology transfer office of an academic or non-profit institution and two (2) years experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry, particularly leadership roles in the areas of product development/R&D, business development or intellectual property. Knowledge of cancer research/oncology a definite asset
In-depth understanding of issues related to protection and prosecution of IP including preparation and filing of patent applications. Exceptional communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills are required. Ability to manage multiple complex technology files, think analytically, and interact effectively in order to maintain extensive contacts within the clinical, scientific and business communities is essential. A basic understanding of regulatory requirements in Canada and the US for clinical testing of diagnostic, therapeutic and medical device technologies is a definite asset.
