Yukon University is seeking a Campus Housing Student Life Coordinator to help create and sustain a safe, inclusive, and academically supportive campus housing environment where students can thrive personally and academically.
This position plays a central role in building community, promoting student well-being, and supporting student success in residence. The Coordinator serves as a direct link between the Campus Housing community and Yukon University’s broader goals of wellness, reconciliation, belonging, and academic achievement.
Working within Campus Housing, the successful candidate will provide leadership in student support, student conduct, crisis response, staff supervision, and community development. This role is ideal for a compassionate, organized, and resilient professional who is committed to student development and inclusive community-building in a Northern post-secondary environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide holistic mentorship to Campus Housing residents and serve as the primary contact for personal, academic, social, and wellness concerns.
- Respond promptly to crises, emergencies, interpersonal conflicts, and student conduct issues using trauma-informed, restorative, and fair practices.
- Uphold, review, and interpret housing policies, procedures, contracts, and the Community Standards handbook to ensure clear expectations and compliance.
- Work closely with the Campus Housing Operations Coordinator on room assignments, move-in and move-out processes, occupancy management, inspections, crisis response, and programming logistics.
- Design, implement, and evaluate programs, workshops, and events that support belonging, intercultural understanding, life skills, academic success, wellness, decolonization, and Indigenization.
- Supervise and support student staff, represent Campus Housing on committees and working groups, and collect and analyze data to support reporting, planning, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, Humanities, Student Affairs, or a related field.
- 1–3 years of relevant experience in student affairs, residence life, youth support, crisis response, or a related environment.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, mentoring, or coaching student staff or peer leaders.
- Strong understanding of student conduct, conflict resolution, restorative practices, trauma-informed approaches, harm reduction, mental health support, student development, crisis management, program planning, and community building.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, and Indigenization in higher education, with familiarity with policies related to non-academic misconduct, sexual violence, and student well-being.
- Strong communication, documentation, problem-solving, strategic thinking, and organization skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment; Mental Health First Aid, mediation, conflict resolution, trauma-informed care, or crisis intervention training is an asset.
Working Conditions
This position combines administrative responsibilities with front-line student support in a dynamic and high-pressure environment. The role includes regular exposure to student distress, trauma, and crisis situations, including mental health concerns, disruptive behaviour, and emergency response.
The Coordinator must be available for flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. The role also requires frequent walking throughout Campus Housing and campus areas, participation in events and inspections, and occasional coordination with external agencies such as hospitals, law enforcement, and community service providers. Emotional resilience, discretion, professionalism, and confidentiality are essential.
Yukon University is committed to the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion. All qualified persons are encouraged to apply; however qualified candidates who self-identify as Yukon first Nations, as well as Metis, Inuit or other Indigenous ancestry will be given priority.
