Research Assistant, Genetic Analysis of Gonad Development in Sea Lamprey
About the role
Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
Position Overview:
The part-time research assistant will perform qPCR and DNA methylation analysis on genes involved in gonad development in sea lamprey. The assistant will be required to perform a variety of laboratory analyses, maintain a well-curated laboratory book, interact with other students in the research team and report to the PI.
Duties:
- Extract RNA/DNA from tissues, and quantify quality and quantity of extracted material.
- Perform PCR and qPCR sample preparation.
- Agarose gel electrophosis and both gel and PCR cleaning of PCR products.
- Analyse DNA sequence variation.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience with PCR and qPCR s well as agarose gel elecrophoresis is required.
- Familiarity with DNA sequence analysis an asset.
- Careful and hard-working trainee expected.
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from May 4, 2026 - August 28, 2026 and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-90 hours.
