ECE Curriculum Developer (Freelance RFQ)

Learning Bird is a 100% remote company with contributors located across Canada. Role Summary You are an Early Childhood Education (ECE) curriculum specialist who designs, develops and/or revises community-based curricula in accordance with provincial or community standards. This includes defining learning objectives, creating or reviewing monthly and weekly plans, play-based and developmentally appropriate daily activities, and selecting instructional materials. You will craft educational experiences that blend pedagogical expertise, digital fluency, and data-informed assessment to foster effective learning outcomes. In this freelance role, you will travel with the Learning Bird team to communities to engage educators, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers, gather materials, and help define the curriculum framework. Once the materials have been collected, you will engage in a collaborative, iterative curriculum-writing process. Throughout this process, you will work alongside the Learning Bird team, educators, administrators, and community members to ensure the curriculum’s cultural relevance, developmental appropriateness, and usability. The role may also include elements of ECE instructional design, including creating resources and learning tools to support community-based ECE curriculum. Where appropriate, this includes collaborating with language speakers to embed authentic vocabulary, oral language opportunities, and language-rich routines into daily classroom practice, thereby strengthening early language acquisition and revitalization efforts. You may also be asked to create and deliver professional development workshops for ECE educators. These workshops typically focus on integrating community needs, Indigenous ways of knowing, and early childhood best practices into classroom environments. These professional development sessions are often delivered in person, in communities we are supporting. Job Profile 70% Developing curriculum 20% Working with partners 10% Travelling What you will do: Design and develop ECE curricula rooted in Indigenous knowledge, community priorities, and early years pedagogies Create developmentally appropriate learning experiences that support holistic growth Develop play-based, land-based, and inquiry-driven activities that reflect the children’s lived experiences, language, and cultural environments. Create classroom resources, as needed, for educators and/or children Develop and deliver professional learning workshops focused on early childhood practices Participate in regular collaborative meetings with Learning Bird team members and community partners Travel to partner communities, as needed, to gather knowledge, materials, and context that inform curriculum development Communicate the partner’s needs and expectations for the design and development of the ECE curriculum to the ad hoc team. Ensure that all partner feedback has been integrated into the final curriculum resources. Training and Experience A Master’s degree in Curriculum Studies or Early Childhood Education, or a Bachelor’s degree in Education with significant experience in ECE curriculum development and design Experience working in early years learning environments (e.g., preschool, daycare, Head Start, or Kindergarten) Experience working with and in Indigenous communities Strong communication skills, including the ability to present your ideas and work in a compelling manner Strong networking and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build respectful relationships with community partners Proven organizational skills Pedagogical Skills Knowledge of principles, theories, and practices used in curriculum development, specifically in Indigenous and ECE education contexts Understanding how children learn and how to structure developmentally appropriate educational content in the early years Ability to provide the depth of knowledge necessary to develop a culturally grounded ECE curriculum Ability to think critically about the learning process and to guide partners and team members in creating meaningful, culturally appropriate ECE curricula and resources Ability to support and engage ECE educators through practical, responsive, and community-informed professional learning In addition, you should have: A suitable remote work environment High-speed Internet Computer Strong computer and software skills Driver’s license A desire for travel to remote Indigenous communities across Canada.
