Role Description This is a part-time, on-site Optometrist role based in Barrie, ON with open availability on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. The Optometrist will provide comprehensive eye examinations, including refraction, ocular health assessments, and diabetic eye evaluations, with a focus on early detection and management of ocular complications related to diabetes and endocrine conditions. Responsibilities include interpreting diagnostic test results, documenting findings in the medical record, collaborating closely with endocrinologists and the interdisciplinary care team, and educating patients on eye health, disease prevention, and treatment options. The Optometrist will also coordinate referrals to ophthalmology or other specialists as needed, support the optometry and eye specialist care program, and contribute to quality improvement and evidence-based practice initiatives. We are a full family practice with an optical store on site. Qualifications Licensed Optometrist in good standing with the appropriate provincial regulatory body (e.g., College of Optometrists of Ontario). Clinical expertise in comprehensive eye examinations, ocular disease detection and management (including diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma), refraction, and prescription of corrective lenses. Strong patient-centered communication skills, including the ability to explain diagnoses, treatment plans, and preventive care clearly and empathetically to diverse patient populations. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team, contributing to integrated diabetes and endocrine care and coordinating referrals and follow-up. Solid clinical documentation and electronic medical record (EMR) skills, with attention to detail, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance. Commitment to evidence-based practice, continuous learning, and participation in professional development or clinical research activities when appropriate. Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage a busy clinical schedule while maintaining high standards of care. Experience working with patients living with diabetes or chronic conditions is an asset; additional certifications or training in ocular disease management are beneficial.
