The Role Library Technician shall provide specialized library support to the government to reserve, circulate, renew, and discharge books and other material at the AFRL technical libraries. This position shall manage the resources of the AFRL Technical Library in accordance with the policies and is accountable for inventory at both the AFRL Technical Library and Field Library (Chem Lab). Key Responsibilities Track and monitor all items circulated in and out of the AFRL Technical Library. Historically the heaviest months are October through January. Enters and updates records in Library systems daily. Enters and edits technical items into the Document Catalog, examples may include document entry fields, machine readable catalog record (MARC), etc. Provides assistance in the use of library catalogs, databases, and indexes to locate library materials. Sorts, replaces, rotates, and shelves books in their proper location. Properly preserve and store all library materials at all libraries. Performs weekly or as required by number of books to be shelved. Performs visual inspection of shelves (shelf reading) and removes damaged library materials; examples of inspection may include books, periodicals, micro-formats, CDs, other hardcopy electronic formats, etc. Damaged materials are given to the Technical Librarian. Inspects shelves monthly. Uses a computer to collect, compile, update, and create Microsoft spreadsheets for the library usage statistics (literature searches/research, visitors, periodicals received, items borrowed/returned; late notices, items ordered, items downloaded, items printed/copies, books/reports shelved, orientations, old reports turned in, request for materials, EZProxy accounts created/terminated, etc.). Data is readily available to the Technical Librarian throughout the month; updated spreadsheets by the first (1st) business day of each month. Performs research to locate materials and using library resources such as scanners, digitizers, online resources, micro-format reader/printers, etc. Accurately and correctly circulates material within established library policies and procedures. Reviews and validates identification prior to registration and circulation. Prepares overdue notices and notifies overdue customers by e-mail and telephone. Processes and records received serials (periodicals). Updates, reviews, and validates serial holdings. Applies property labels and stamps, barcodes, and notations to all library materials. Reports missing periodical issues to librarian. Transports and processes materials from library to field library. Examples of material for transport and processing may include shelving, rotating, and sorting library materials in their proper location. Must be able to carry library materials up and down a flight of stairs. Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Excellent customer service/interpersonal communication skills Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite Experience working with electronic library circulation, catalog systems, and various software programs. Associate degree required Two – four years professional experience as a library technician. Ability to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and ability to obtain a secret security clearance. Preferred Qualifications Bachelors’ degree Prior experience working in a technical library is strongly preferred Prior experience working on a military installation or directly supporting Air Force/Space Force operations Wage Determination Job Description: Per Wage Determination No. 2015-5603, Revision No 30, The Library Technician provides information service such as answering questions regarding card catalogs and assists in the use of bibliographic tools, such as Library of Congress catalog. The incumbent performs routine cataloging of library materials, files cards in catalog drawers according to system used, answers routine inquiries, and refers persons requiring professional assistance to Librarian. This Technician verifies bibliographic information on order requests, works or directs workers in maintenance of stacks or in section of department or division with tasks such as ordering or receiving section of acquisitions department, card preparation activities in catalog department, or limited loan or reserve desk operation of circulation department. Physical Demands: Individuals may need to sit or stand as needed. May require walking primarily on a level surface for periodic periods throughout the day. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the workday. Will require working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Proper lifting techniques required. Work Environment: The performance of this position may require exposure to the manufacturing and laboratory areas, where under certain conditions require the use of personal equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses with side shields, mandatory hearing protection, and/or protective gloves.
