Tigrinya Editor & Proofreader Company: Mahtem Publishing House Location: Remote Employment Type: Contract / Project-Based Start Date: Immediate Working Hours: Flexible, based on project requirements and deadlines About the Role Mahtem Publishing House is seeking a highly skilled Tigrinya Editor & Proofreader to support the editing, proofreading and preparation of high-quality Tigrinya publications. This is a remote, contract or project-based role suitable for an experienced editor with an excellent command of written Tigrinya and strong English language skills. The successful candidate will work primarily on books and book manuscripts, while also supporting other publishing materials, including translations, articles, poetry, children's literature, religious and academic works, and other written content as required. The Editor & Proofreader will play an important role in ensuring that manuscripts meet high standards of linguistic accuracy, clarity, consistency, readability and overall editorial quality before publication. Key Responsibilities The successful candidate will: Edit and proofread Tigrinya manuscripts, with a primary focus on books and long-form publications. Review grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, sentence structure and overall language accuracy. Improve clarity, flow, consistency and readability while respecting the author's voice, style and intended meaning. Review manuscripts for consistency in terminology, names, formatting and language usage. Work closely with authors to provide constructive editorial feedback and support the development of manuscripts. Review and edit Tigrinya translations to ensure accuracy, natural language usage and consistency with the original text. Support the preparation of manuscripts for publication. Conduct fact-checking and consistency checks where required and appropriate to the project. Review proofs and final versions of publications before printing or digital release. Help develop and maintain Tigrinya editorial standards, conventions and style guidelines. Support manuscript evaluation and, where required, contribute to discussions regarding book selection and acquisitions. Work collaboratively with authors, translators, designers and the wider publishing team. Manage assigned projects independently and deliver work within agreed timelines and deadlines. Use Microsoft Word, Google Docs and other relevant editing and publishing tools to track changes, provide comments and manage editorial revisions. Be willing to complete additional editorial tasks relevant to individual publishing projects. Essential Requirements Applicants must meet the following requirements: Language Skills Native-level proficiency in Tigrinya, with an exceptional command of written Tigrinya. Strong English language skills are essential, including the ability to communicate professionally and work with English-language materials where required. Experience At least two years of relevant experience in editing, proofreading, publishing, journalism, translation or a related field; or A strong and demonstrable track record of professionally edited or proofread work. Education A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; or More than five years of demonstrated professional experience and a proven track record in editing, proofreading, publishing, writing, translation or a related area. Professional Skills Excellent attention to detail and a strong ability to identify linguistic, grammatical and editorial errors. Strong understanding of grammar, spelling, punctuation and written style. The ability to maintain consistency across long and complex manuscripts. Good judgement and the ability to distinguish between necessary editorial intervention and preserving an author's voice. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly when working with authors and other contributors. The ability to work independently in a remote environment. Excellent time-management and organisational skills. The ability to manage multiple assignments and meet agreed deadlines. Professionalism, reliability and a commitment to high editorial standards.
